Default Temp gauge or fan?

The other day driving along my car got up to red.....so i pulled ova and checked the engine and it wasnt even hot when the air con is on it doesnt get hot at all so does that mean that the fan is not spinning when the aircon is off?

Default Hot ???

How do you know your car was not hot?, did you have a thermometer with you? just asking as it is hard to tell the difference between a warm motor and a cooked motor just looking at it or feeling it with the back of your hand, might pay to get it checked out by a cooling specialist, and yes you should have a fan that comes on if it gets hot and the air-con is off. Hope this helps.
