Hi all,
I'm new to JC and looking for some advice. I'm looking at getting my first car soon and my first preference is a Commodore, was wondering which is the best model to get? I don't have alot of money to spend, around about $4000 as im sure insurance and rego will cost a bit. EDIT: posted this somewhere else, but figured out i should post it here? not sure how to delete the other one :S
Cheers, Chilly
All things considered probably a VR is the best one, maybe an Acclaim or something like that, they come with all the extra goodies you like to have, abs/air bag and irs suspension, you'll get one with enough money to spare to fix any little problems and get it on the road
Ok, cool thanks![]()
For around $4k i'd say your looking at VS Berlina , with good k's. Or a 5speed exec/spac if your lucky.
Cheers.

Cool, thanks guys, will continue my search![]()
Personally, I would go for a newer executive over and older berlina/calais. Only because berlina/calais have more electronics that are more likely to F up, if they havent already.
Depending on your personal preference on looks, I'd go for a VT exec over a VS... Only because I like the looks of the VT better
good luck![]()
VT would be fantastic, if i could afford it :/
I've seen a couple nice example for around the 4grand mark... but thats in Vic
I know if I was selling my series 2 calais I'd be lucky to get 6grand. IF that. Thats AFTER I fix the bits of damage that its got
yeah most ive seen here seem to be about 5, although i saw a VT the other day for 3400 rego'd interstate though. so a little suss since every other one is about 5.
Ive been car hunting, there is so many rubbish, high km VTs out there that people are looking for 7-9k for its unbelievable.
I rang the local holden dealer this week because i wanted to see what they had in stock, tried to sell me a 1998 VT commodore (he couldnt tell me what model or series) with 112xxxkms for $11,400.
True that, been seeing that kind of thing everywhere.
You could probably pick up a VT exec for around 4k if you look around.
Either that or I would go for a VN Calais, I picked mine up for $700 with CAI, lowerd 2", black as black tint, 2 1/2" exhaust, adjustable panard rod, full leather and electrics. The computer was buggerd but they told me its the fuel pump. I tested the pump and it was fine, checked the error codes and it gave me a impossible error so I figured it was the computer, got one for free and she runs fine.
Id say VN because they are easier to source parts for, cheaper in general and it will give you more money left over if you want a stereo or for rego and insurance, maybe tyres ect.
Even if you can pick up a VN for under a 1k...
CAI $100
Corvette Servo $80
Trans service kit $90
Lowerd springs $200
Tint $180
15 x 7 rims with 225s $200
Cat back 2 1/2" $200
Chip $100
Should make a pretty sweet first ride.
I would go for the VT myself, a lot of cheap ones on ebay right now but if I couldnt find one in good condition I would go for a another VN.
Yeah the VT's are good but the only ones if seen in the price range have really high km's and if that's the case I'd rather get an earlier model with better km's. Your VN suggestion sounds pretty good![]()
