Tyre choise

Hi everyone,
we have a vz commodore exec for the family which we bought secondhand.

The tyre placard on the drivers door says that we should have 225/ 60/ 15 in diameter tyres to 15 in rims fitted.

But the previous owner has 225/ 50/ 16 in tyres fitted to 16 in rims on the car.

First of all will this cause damage to the drive mechnism in the car ex: Diff and auto transmission?

Secondly we live in qld, is it leigal to have it like that?

Pls let me know because we are a concern for the safety aspect of things,

They 'shouldn't' alter your speedo, because even though the rim size is an inch bigger, from 15" up to 16", the tire width is still the same, but 10% lower in profile, from 60% down to 50%, this makes up for the larger rim diameter, so should all good.
