Handbrake Trouble

Hey guys,
I just encountered a problem with my handbrake. I tried to put it on and I could hear the brakes go on but it will not 'lock in'. The button stays depressed all the time and it won't stay locked by itself. It's always been a bit of a bastard since I got the car, very difficult to put on - needs to be pulled all the way up before it even engages/locks.
What do I do about this? I'm hoping there's a quick fix for it!

Sounds like it could be the spring in the handle that pushes the little lock pin onto the ratchet. It also pushes the button up.

Okay, so is this something I can try to fix myself, or do I need to get someone to repair it?

Nevermind, somehow it managed to fix itself.
