I had been hunting around for an aircompressor for a while something around 12-16CFM I was just about to go buy a new one after not being able to find a decent second hand one and I picked up a 25 CFM 3 Phase compressor for a bargin. Its about 3 times bigger than what I need and would easily run a small to medium sized panel shop but hey atleast I will never run out of air
I finally got around to connecting it up today and its as loud or louder than my V8 commodore.
Any tips on making it quieter so I dont piss the neighbors off? It has to go in the shed, outside isnt an option.
Shed is timber frame, fibro clad Im thinking of framing up a box for the comprerssor either lining it with foam or insulation bats. Any thought anyone?
cheers
Scott

If you put your compressor in an enclosed area it will run hot if it is running for very long. Most of the noise would be coming from the air intake. Try making a manifold or some sort of ducting from the compressor air intakes and run it to an aircleaner box from a Hilux or Commodore or something similar that is mounted to your compressor. You can then run a pipe from your new aircleaner box to the outside of your shed so the filter wont block up as quickly if you are painting inside your shed. My uncle ran a setup like this in his shed when he used to spraypaint cars and it made the compressor a lot quieter.
The Compressor is an Ingersoll-Rand where the current manifold bolt onto the cylinder is joined to another part so I cant really remove it unless I do some cutting which I dont want to do. It got an oval shapped aircleaner that is stepped so making a manifold for it is going to be a bitch
How would I go bending some PVC pipe up to fit over the original aircleaner maybe with a bit of foam for a snug fit to a commodore air box?
Also I am thinking of making a cover and lining it with sound foam or making the cover out of cool room panels but leaving the base about 100mm off the ground to vent. Do you think it would get enough air flow?
thanks for the response
cheers

I think running PVC from the compressor aircleaner to a commodore airbox should work. Running a filter in the airbox as well as the compressor aircleaner will deaden some noise.
If you made a cover it would probably need a hole in the top somewhere to let the heat out as well as the air gap at the bottom so air would circulate through.
