There's so much conflicting information about this it's not funny. What is the proceedure for installing new lifters? Soak them in oil? pump them up? bleed them? or just throw them in empty?
I've read numerous stories of engines eating cams when the owners put in lifters already full of oil.
I just throw them in straight out of the box, never had a premature cam failure yet. If the engine picks up oil pressure instantly, they'll bleed up in no time anyway. Just make sure you put plenty of cam lube on the base if it's a flat tappet, but if it's a roller just a bit of engine oil on the lobes will do the trick.
Sweet, i was leaning towards doing that. The cam is coated in assy lube anyway. Thanks.
allways thouroly thouroughly damn it LOL allways clean all the coating of the cam before it goes in its protectant to stop it rusting but wont give it any lubrication properties kerosene it all off

Yeah i wasn't talking about the anti rust stuff. I think that's just a thick machine grease. I put moly lube on the cam.
heh going overkill moli is good shit .just soak them in clean oil for half an hour if you can be bothered and drop the suckers in will be fine doesnt take long for them to fill when the engines fired into life.

do NOT prime lifters in a new engines (but do cover lifter base and cam with LOTS of lube and pour oil over valve train))
why?
startup will be difficult ...a primed lifter will hold a valve open (until it bleeds down)...even to the point where the valve spring may ' coil bind' and you get a bent pushrod
its puts pressure on the cam lobe ..and you can lose one even with lube as the stressed valve train wipes the lube off
do NOT fill oil pump with grease or vaseline...all that does is stop oil getting to the lifters on startup
if you want to speed up oil going to the valve train on startup...fill the pushrod with oil!

Alright, i didnt prime the lifters. But i've installed the rest of the valve train using the zero lash + half turn technique, but the rockers are pretty loose when the valves are closed. There's no lash of course but i can turn them side to side about 10 degrees. Will this change once the lifters fill with oil or is this how it's supposed to be? Never done rockers before.
are they adjustables or stock if stock wind em down LOL

They are non adjustable yella terra rockers. Everywhere i've read says to do it as i described earlier to set the lifter pre-load correctly. However, isnt the preload is determined by the pedestal height and pushrod length.
0 lash + half will be fine to get it going then redo them once its been running and they are full of oil

Would i be better off just torquing them the way Gregories outlines?
