Ive just bought a 1998 VT 5.0 Manual. I hear a noise from the rear when Im driving slowly usually around corners or reversing. I hear it the worst when Im reversing 90 degree turn into my car space when it clunk clunk clunks... I also notice it when Im taking off which is more a sudden doof when I let the clutch out. Its an LSD Diff and I think thats the problem. Ive tried rolling while in Neutral and doing quick swerving to see if its the suspension but It only seems to do it while the car is in gear. I dont hear it when going fast but very noticeable when slow and it almost feels like the slower the worse.
Please help.
Mine has exactly the same irritating problem! Its also a 5.0l 1998 VT Manual. I want it fixed ASAP! Did you locate the problem, Scott? Renee
This is a guess but it could be the friction cones in the diff binding. I seem to recall the old Holden limmies having this problem, particularly if the oil was old or not LSD oil. Try changing the diff oil, making sure you drain as much of the old stuff as possible and ensuring that you put LSD oil in.
mate what u do is u drain the old lsd oil out and put nulon fullsynth high performance lsd diff oil in it.cost like $25 bucks for 1.5 litter,so ull need to buy two of them.
straght up mate it will fix the problem!no more clunks ...happened to me in my vt clubby allgood now
