I read something about this in The Age.
The price of fuel is determined by the gate price (?)
in Singapore. It's currently at $1.26 or some such.
When it dips down to $1.13 it's because everyone is
discounting, rather than everyone profiting by pushing
    it up to $1.26.

So why are prices in Australia determined by a price in a far-off
place like Singapore? It goes something like this.... If you were
an oil company, and could only get $0.99 per litre here, but could
get $1.26 elsewhere (China?), and it cost you $0.10 a litre to ship
it there, where would you sell it?

    China yeh?

So then no one would be selling petrol at all in Australia, which would
drive prices up because of the increased demand, until the price of
petrol was, you guessed it, $1.26.

Moral of the story is -- switch to LPG.

I just dug up a link, which explains it better than I could:

I don't look anymore its to scary
All i know is that i'm sick of walking up to the counter and hearing that will be $83.25 or something similar.
    Now for a prayer...

To our god, who art made in Adelaide. Holden be thy name. Thy legends come, and championships won, on circuits as it is on Mount Panorama. Give us this day our daily grunt, and forgive us our burnouts, as we forgive those who choose to drive fords. Lead us into temptation, and deliver us a V8. For thine is the spirit, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever.
    HOLDEN!

DAMN IT! I hate oil companies! We definitely have the technology for petrol engines that consume much less fuel than the average and yet that tech is never released due to some limiting factors beyond my knowledge.

Yeah I noticed some wacky prices in NZ last year.

    Toowoomba QLD - about 115.9c/l
    Iraq - about 5c/l

Apparently it will jump to about 180 soon and stay there

I got 124.9 in my area it is shocking. John Howard said hew will drop the taxes off petrol when the GST comes in i am not going to be able to afford to drive soon. I also here that petrol will be up to 2.00 by end of year.
