    Default Auto transmission shift kits

Hi all, new to the forum, not new to commodores.

I have just bought a VP S-pac auto, been looking around on the web at various mods etc. I have one problem, i have always owned manual cars, never had an auto until now so dont know much about auto boxes. I have seen shift kits etc on ebay but im not really all that clear on what they actually do, I understand they affect the way the auto changes gears to the extent that it improves shifts etc. But how does a auto box feel compared to one with a shift kit installed and what differences are there between the different kits, Ie Stage 1, 2 etc?

    Can someone explain?

A shift kit just changes how firm the shifts are and when it changes gears

stage 2 shift kit does exactly as said above and you also have the choice of changing gears manualy

stage 3 is what I have and it makes the shifts firmer but you must drive it like a manual it's what is mostly used in drag racing

Since your a police man you may have to book yourself because a shift kit can cause the tyres to chirp when you change gears Lol

I had a stage 2 kit in my VS V6, when cold the 1-2 shift chirped the tyres. It makes the 1-2 shift extremely firm at all but the lightest throttle.

Within 3 months my diff was rooted though. Developed a very bad clunk, very quickly. Was good while it lasted though.

not at the moment, gotta get it sorted for rego, fix up some of the cosmetic stuff then I wil start playing with the gearbox and engine. Im debating whether or not to stick with the auto or look into a manual conversion. Not sure if a manual conversion is really worth the hassle though.

Yeah, i really want to do it. What bits did you need to collect? Manual pedal box, 5 speed gearbox, bell housing, centre console for manual. What else?

    Fly wheel,
    Clutch/pressure plate,
    Clutch cable,
Front half of/new tailshaft to suit the manual box,

    Maybe manual computer/memcal?
    Maybe a gearbox crossmember?

Off the top of my head, and half asleep, thats about all I could come up with, and what you have all ready said should be about it, as well as whatever bolts etc...

My girlfriend was taking over building my VH, going to be a VP V6, (so it had to be auto for her to drive) but its looking like she has bought a new Barina, so its mine again, and well, a manual would be more fun

    Haha, nice!

Heres a link just on what we need

The complete Vn-Vr Manual Conversion Guide.

Full of good info there, although the list is a little bit longer :/

EDIT: Not really, just a manual starter motor

Shift kits are good but to do it propperly you realy need to buy a heavy duty sun shell and heavy duty sprags or it could end up in a full rebuild.

And to fit those parts for strength you basicaly got to pull the box down and rebuld it anyway, so its good and bad, good it may last, bad it may crap itself.

sorry for sounding like a smart arse but why would people that love driving manuals buy an auto and then have to convert it? I would buy the manual to start with. Maybe consider selling the auto and buying a manual.

Because, in some cases manuals are almost impossible to find...

On the rare chance (that you do find one) the things most likely either, had its tits thrashed out of it and on its last legs, or already wrapped around a pole because some other goose thought they were a racing car driver, or the owner thinks it justafiable to charge an excessive amount, because its a manual.

If you can use a spanner, and not afraid of some work, you can easily convert an auto over to manual - making the car (maybe) worth more, making it what you want, and doing what most of us like doing spending time working on our cars.

    What he said

I looked long and hard for a manual, im pissed off cause i used to have a manual VP, was only an executive but a manual non the less. In the end as Zuessy said every manual I looked at had been thrashed or was rediculously over priced. I am prepared to pay a bit more for a manual, but some people just want way to much.

Hmmm I have never worked on a car but I seem to be mechanically minded... so it would be a bit of a mission for me to think i could do this yeh? what would a conversion for a VS berlina cost? and if i got the parts and then rocked up at a mechanic do u think he would hate that i killed his profit margin by getting the parts myself? and how much cheaper could it get?

Yes I tight atm, i dont wanna spend more than the cars worth but i cant afford a much wanted SS
