Firstly, I'm not whinging, I knew it would happen one day.
I just wanted to no the details of how the test is measured. I have heard its done at certain RPM at specific distance or something??? Can anybody shed some light.
Ben
There is no such thing as stupid questions, Only stupid people.
You go down to the place that is authorised to do the test, park your car outside, the tester will place a microphone on a stand approximately 3/4 of a metre or so away from your exhaust at 45 degrees to the exhaust (distance is measured by the length of the mic stand). They then sit in the car with the db unit in hand, rev your car to the specified rpm and check to see if the meter reads over or under.
If the db level of the exhaust is clearly under the limit the first time round, they will leave it at that, if it goes close they will give it another test to ensure it tests under the second time round.
They then draw a picture of your exhaust system and fax this away to the EPA with the required paperwork verifying that your vehicle has passed the test.
Hope that's what you were after.
pretty sure its gotta be quieter than 92db at 3000 rpm, from memory and experience :P
It's 90db (which is very, very quiet), I had mine 2 weeks ago! lol. Not sure on the number of revs for a V6 though...
It's revved to a percentage of the maximum operating RPM for that particular engine (they have a book with the required RPM for every car). As WNTDVT said, it has to be at or below 90db at those revs. Pretty much anything apart from the stock exhaust will be over the limit on a Commodore. I got done with a single 2.5" on a 5 litre with 2 mufflers on and even with a restrictor plate that i made to go after the cat, it was right on the limit.
Is it just exhaust noise they test? What about intake noise?![]()
Well, if there is any noise coming from the engine itself, it will certainly add to the noise of the exhaust test. Should have heard my brothers VH with a solid roller cam when it turned up for an EPA test.....Needed his twin 2.5" system taken off and a twin 2" exhaust with 4 proper mufflers on it to shut it up. Because the engine itself was so noisy, it needed the exhaust to be ultra quiet and that was allowed to be 96db![]()
I think the noise level is ridiculous...! Harley's are way louder...
Bikies ride Harleys.....

Lets all ride Harleys just to stick it to the man. LOL.

Bikes also have different limits guys...
Bikes are also very common targets for EPA notices...
yer my factory piped cbr250rr is squealing its tits off at 18,000rpm... Way louder than my car, and thats a factory pipe.

Harleys from factory meet the same noise levels as any other bike of the same year model. They are actually very quiet from the dealer
Reason every Harley sounds like a loud fart, is because just about every harley owner gets the thing home, removes the factory mufflers and fits shotgun pipes. Dealers will sell the shotgun pipes, but won't fit them because it's illegal.
Most overly loud Harleys aren't legal, I've defected several after they failed a noise test
yes there is a set distance, angle, rpm etc
here's the national standard test procedure
