Well its time to upsize from the VZ SV6. Problem is the wife really has her heart set on a ford territory!!!!I want to buy a new (ish) SSV wagon but i cant get it through to her that I cant buy a Ford. Problem is i looked at a SY Turbo GHIA Territory and i kinda like it
.
Has any one gone from a Holden to a Ford? Or should someone slap me now?
Does going from a VN to a Telstar count? Note that I'm back in the Lion's den these days.
The Territory has been picked up on a number of serious quality issues in recent times. The paintwork, particularly around the inner tail-gate area, has been found to be sus, and serious corrosion can be a problem at various locations. Front ball joints in the earlier ones were defective and have collapsed in a number of vehicles. I don't know if they have upgraded the balljoints and a Turbo wouldn't be an early build, but it's something to look into.
territories aren't very good, and im not just saying that because its a ford. they just aren't built well. my mums is an 07 model SY territory, AWD and SR spec. so 6 speed box.
the steering is TOO QUICK. you literally breathe on the steering wheel and you change lanes. because the steering is that fast, sweeping corners aren't very fun when you go a little quicker than average. rear suspension geometry is up the creek badly. there is boat-loads of roll steer from the rear end, so couple that with the quick steering and you have a handful. you've pretty much got to have 2 goes at the corner. one when you turn in then you have to correct for the roll steer. you don't even need to be driving briskly to be an issue, its just some drivers don't understand whats happening. add that to the shortish wheelbase and its ultra twitchey
the ride of the thing is ok, actually a tad stiff. but if they slowed down the steering and stretched the wheelbase a bit it would be heaps better. then they could relax the spring rates. im not sure what they were trying to do when they set up these things, they will never be a sporty vehicle. there was no need to go overboard with the handling.
there is zero engine braking due to the tuning. this annoys me the most. if i put it in manual mode and go down to 2nd i'll get a little bit of engine braking. but at around 3500 ish rpm the engine starts getting fuel again to the point that there is no engine braking. its very unsettling at first if you come into a corner using the engine braking and a little bit of braking. when the engine starts getting fuel you better be ready to jump on the brakes, because it will start to accelerate again. even worse on downhills.
the front seats are quite good with nice shape and foam. but the back seat. my god. what were they thinking. i would rather ride in the back of a crewman. the foam is rediculously stiff. i have never felt a stiffer standard seat in a car in my life. its uncomfortably stiff for anything more than short drives. couple that with the stiff suspension, you feel everything that you drive over. now, if the driver is going over a sort of bumpy road and not holding the steering wheel pefectly still (i mean perfectly) the whole car will twitch. its not as noticeable in the front seats but in the rear you get thrown around.
the sealant between panels is a joke, ours has serious corrosion issues in the engine bay. the paint is just that thin and the sealant was put on my a blind person so its just going to get worse. i wouldnt be suprised to hear about these cars falling to pieces in 8 years..
the engine is very smooth though. they got that one right. spins nicely up to the governed 6000rpm. not a limiter like a commodore (mang mang mang) but just stops revving. just sits at 6k.
Well i did iti brought a ford....
Went and had a look at a mazda CX-7 and it was a really nice car, wife loved it but the salesman was a complete ass! had no intrest in us and he had a look at our 04 VZ SV6 Immac Cond 18s and 74 ks and offered us $9000 so i told him to bash it and went to ford and got a brand new ts ghia. gave me what i wanted for the commodore too. But not all is lost, looking around for a VH commodre for a project car so as far as i can see im still a holden man
Check for rust when pulling off tailgate rubbers.
should have had a look at the outlanders
yeah didnt go much on them, and would never consider a captiva as they are deawoo built
looked at a subaru forester aswell but a little too small in the boot
