hi guys i have a few mates who have driftmobiles now and im getting a little jealous... what are your opinions on the best model as a drift thrasher? im leaning towards VL,VN or VR. i dont wanna spend megabucks on it just something to stuff around with![]()
HORSEPOWER- Some is good, more is better and too much is just enough!!
When in doubt,USE FORCE!
Vl's are awesome great cars but so are VN's and VR's. I can't make up my mind which one is better!
I'd go VL and find a s/h gen3 and lever it into the engine bay.
early models VB-VL, with a decent engine, would be the go
VN-VZ are too big/clumbersome, and the chassis's are extremely flimsy (thanks to the sikaflexed firewall....)
Go one better, find yourself a cheap Silvia, 180sx or something, much more suited to the task!

VL - cheap, easy to find, and liiiight as a feather![]()
We have a VL we are building as a burnout car. Carby 5L, 4 speed.
not trying to hijack but if you were looking at a newer commodore, would anything vt upwards be anygood?
"The mind is its own place, and in itself, can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven."
apparently wasting my time with 97 cubic inches
milk doesnt come in 1.6 litres
my geminis
yea if i was gonna do it id do it right, any idea which model ie vt vx vy vz would be best?
That will help the guy out 10 fold there. Two totally different setups required to do the job well and safely.
Go the early Commodores with big swaybars, good suspension and a nice mechanical/running condition manual 253/308 depending whats easier/cheaper to get if that way inclined. These models can be converted to manual steering quite easilly aswell to save on added drams of overheating steering and belts dislodging.Good luck.
If you're buying a car to be a drift hack, newer doesn't really matter. Plus, the VT weighs a million kilos more than anything VB-VS, kinda critical for drifting.
And to OP, if you really want to get into drifting, buy something Japanese. The chassis design and a plethora of after market support for say an S platform Nissan really can't be matched by a Commodore.
-Buy a VR
-Remove sound deadening
-Sway bars, springs, strut brace etc (feel free to start welding in a cage)
-Throw a spool + gears in
-Manual
-Lots of rubber
Just make sure if you buy a vn-vr, it has good oil pressure, because apparently thats the problem which causes alot of buick engines to throw a rod out of the side....
Also
Vr engines had a 9.0:1 compression, vn-vp had 8.5:1
and apparently VR's got the supercharged rods from the U.S standard
Now get out there and smoke a shitload of tyres champ![]()
i know you said commodore but i would be lookin at a r31 skyline![]()
