the only proper way to test power at the crank is on an engine dyno, not a chassis dyno.

your car was on a chassis dyno, so the power was recorded 'at the wheels'

    ps. is it manual?

Think he was asking if the figures relesed by GMH (or whoever) mean 124kw at the wheels or fly wheel

manufacturers always quote engine power/torque, dynos will only give you power at the wheels
it's virtually impossible to calculate engine hp from a chassis dyno, but a rough method is rear wheel hp is equivalent to engine kw
ie 180rwhp = 180kw at the engine. It's only a very rough estimate though

The 124KW reading is recorded by having the engine attached directly to an engine dyno (no trans/diff/anything) to get the 'at the flywheel' reading.

I've only ever seen 'fwkw' to refer to 'front wheel kilowatt' for a front wheel drive car...

Some power is lost through the drivetrains and wheels. The power is lost by friction in the transmission, differential and tyres, and given off as heat. Generally automatics lose more power then manuals due to the torque converter being inefficient, and having big heavy wheels loses power because the trans/diff have to work harder to turn them.

Assuming your engine makes a healthy 124kw at the flywheel, 112.9rwkw would mean you have 9% of power lost between your engine and the wheels. This is a pretty good result, even for a manual. I'd say your dyno reading is a bit happy/optimistic or your engine is making more then 124kw.

The dyno should be pretty accurate because i got i done at one of the best places in adelaide from what ive heard....wasnt there a thing with the buick engines that some made quite an amount more power then alot of the rest and had better fuel economy and lasted longer or is that just rumors

also keep in mind manufacturers don't engine dyno test each individual engine. They get the figures from the original test engine and that's the figure they quote for any car fitted with that engine.

But in reality, individual engine output from factory can vary significantly between one car and another of the very same model, due to the innacuracies of mass manufacture.

I got it done at hi-tech dyno performance and the guy i bought it off owned it his hole life and he said hes never had anything done to it perfomance wise and the only mod ive done is 2 and 1/4 inch extractors and its done 300,456kms...it actually broke 300,000 on the dyno

True that. I know a dude who had an EF or EL XR6 ute which was a freak. It pulled harder than almost every other Ford 6 on the road at time even though it was stock.
