Hey guys,
Got hurricane extractors and 2.5" catback system on my V6 and I want it louder and more beefy without being illegal and knocking out the cat.
I have heard about cannons but also seen how s*** they can make the cars look and personally have never heard one before on a commodore, I was trying to think of possible things to do to the exhaust to make it sound louder and different whilst keeping it legal. Can anyone tell me if these ideas would work at all and opinions on it's sound and maybe if NAAF or other exhaust guys could give his/her opinion on the thoughts.
Also, with cannons it's my understanding that the holes and space in them create more sound?...please correct me if im wrong.
Custom Exhaust Ideas
NOTE: These are all based on customising a 2.5" catback with extractors and standard cat.
1. Use the cannon idea but get small 3.5" cannons and attach them to the back and weld them to make it look like a basic twin tip. Hopefully make it sound louder without looking like cannons?
2. Leave standard tip put instead of a rear muffler, weld in a cannon just after the middle muffler? That way it looks like a basic muffler but should produce more sound?
3. Leave the tip but cut the pipe behind it and stop the pipe just after the cabin of the car (leave centre muffler) and put in a 45 degree dump pipe (seen this on a ute and sounds great, v6). Louder and looks standard unless they look under your car
4. Replace centre muffler with a massive cannon and no resi. Assuming it would look like a normal muffler, but with the holes and stuff should make it sound loud?
5. Fitting a dual piping after the centre muffler and placing a hotdog in each and then letting it finish with a one pipe outlet at the end?
no other thoughts at the moment, just haven't heard anyone talking about custom exhaust ideas is all, just he basic stuff and was curious if people could let me know thoughts on mine or even give their 2 cents on some custom piping angles or something that can make your v6 or v8 sound different then all the other ones out there?
Without being legal I'm not too sure... A little hotdog in the middle couldn't hurt though
putting a cannon on a commodore is just asking for some one to bash you DONT DO IT and they also sound shit

Remove the rear resonator if your system has one.... And do hiflow cats.
Just fu*k the whole thing off from the cat back and hang a tip from the rear guard. That will set off car alarms and look legal.
Yeah just get some big long pipe extractors and dump from that. Sounds like a drag car man.

you have probly seen this in many a car magazine but i think it would be pretty cool. its a way of having illegal sound just hide the know or switch when u go for the test if you ever get defected
i plan on getting it done to my car when the bank permits.
Look people wont know i have a cannon because it will not look like i have one at all, that's the idea, also if i remove the middle muffler and replace it with a cannon, that puts it closer to the extractors and also gives that an additional 6 feet of piping to work its way through before exiting the system to create the sound, hence not soundign like a normal cannon.
Did you guys even read my suggestions or did you just see 'cannon' and decide to flame away?
Cannons sound terrible...
A friend of mine has a VT v6 with only centre mufflers and it sounds alright for a 6... still sounds like a bag of shit tho
on that xforce site you are wanting the varex style muffler.. forgot to mention that.
No matter where a cannon is placed in your exhaust system it will sound shit
If you want it to sound different remove the cat the center and rear muffler and just put a resonator in the middle
Don't think it will sound real good but that's as loud as your going to get the vt with out just driving around with no exhaust

its not a vt, but on our Vx wagon all we got is a lukey 2.5 cat back sports straight thru middle muffler and then straight pipe to a 4inch tip. And i think it sounds hot!! For a v6 anyway. Has a real roar when ur up it yet a nice burble when ur cruising. My other car however, had twin 2.5 inch pipes, two straight thru mufflers and one big resi (3 inch) on the bum to quieten it down. but that was a worked VR V6 and also sounded porn!! Quiet on cruise but off tap when put to the floor! Amd what iv found to be the common denominator, make sure u have no baffles in there that way u get the true sound when u gun it, and not a reflected sound like a baffled type muffler.
Jesus its not rocket science. Its a bloody exhaust system
Single 2.5" system with sports muffler
Or go twin 2" with a couple of cats and custom pipes from the manifolds. Be better off with some extractors.
personally I'd go the later.
um, 355 with straight pipes dumped at the diff.
also stainless (cannon) will be a bitch to weld onto mild steel so ditch that idea.
The only way to get a V6 to sound "OK" is to keep it quiet.....I have an L67 with extractors twin 2.5" cats into a single 3" with 2 good quality mufflers and it sounds alright for a V6 because it's relatively quiet. Loud is bad with a V6.
agree with that.
I have not heard a single loud V6 Commodore that doesn't sound terrible. V6's are a good engine, but they fail terribly on exhaust note when opened up, and unfortunately there isn't much you can do about it. A guy I used to work with had a VR V6 and he had a 2.5 inch single system, with sports centre muffler and a matching rear resonator. With this combo, the engine had a nice low frequency note at idle and still sounded good across most of the rev range, without the bark, crackling, 'mang' that always seem to go with a big exhaust V6. It wasn't loud, but it was still louder than stock and had a much nicer sound than factory.
Best bit of advice I can offer, is make sure you have a resonator fitted. You can buy good performance resonators, they will lower the volume somewhat, but eliminate most of the nasty, high frequency noises that make V6's sound so bad.
It sounds like you just want a freaking loud system, you should just bolt up straight through twin 2" or 2.5" pipes

Cannons only sound good when they've got a big, metal ball comming out the end.
i just got lukey 2.5" catback on tuesday and its loud enought to be heard but its still quiet at idle and i had a bit of drone (its a auto) around 60kph but today i got a tip welded onto the end and its eliminated the drone around the 60kph mark and has also changed the sound slightly
