    Default Which is best?

G'day, I've a problem. My vh has no motor! My Blue & Black motors have both died due to age & wear n tear! Need some advice please> Which is best? A carby 202 or Buick v6? I am after Power as well as Fuel economy. I would love to put a v8 in it, but I live in the sticks, and have to travel a lot.

the buick V6 would be better on fuel and power, but an ecotec would be better.

V8's aren't nessassarily worse on fuel economy.. It really comes down to how you drive it. Remember that most V8s return worse echonomy purly on the capasity of an engine. I knew a bloke who had a six and an 8 commi. He swore on his mothers grave that he spent less on fuel for the v8 because it toed his trailer at a much lower RPM. Also if he was driving somewhere with lots of hills he took the v8 because it required alot less RPM to get up the hills, thus burnt less fuel... Then again he could have been a ########...

Maybe you should consider getting a small V8. like a 3.6 LT one... Depends how much you want a V8 though.

To answer your question. Definatly the Buick... In saying that, the 202 would be better suited to the car.

Hell... Go all out: Chop the front and get a hemi 265, I know you want too!

I like the 265 Hemi idea, but My dad's charger goes through like 25L every 100 kays if he takes it easy. Too many options out there tho.
V8 you could go for the toyota 1UZ-FE, and the new L98's aren't that thirsty. 6 Cylinders, you've got the Ecotec, RB series,
2JZ supra motor (in my opinion best 6 cylinder option) You could even chuck in a 4 cylinder or rotary. You'd need a turbo with the last 2
to get the VK humming properly. Its all out there brother, the world is your oyster

Thanks guys for your help, these are the engines that i've got in my shed, they are a (3x) 202's and (3x) v8's and (1x) buick v6.....The V6 has crack head, I might throw that out, Or I should just build myself a tough blue 202 and make it reliable and great on fuel. Gear box's i've got, trimaticand a aussie 4 spd, I think it maybe a celica 5spd that came with the ute. I know its a 5spd, that also has castlemaine rod shop bell housing. And, this car is my everyday car too....... Cheers Jason

Yeah but a charger runs tripple webbers and other fun stuff. Use ALOT of fuel. Standard 265 will run 30 miles to the gallon... which is something like 8 LT per 100 K's... Which sounds like a crock of crap.. But its right there on Wiki. DUnno how accurate it is because it needs Citation... But whatever. I like to dream. My CM was pretty good on fuel... Was even better when I used LPG.

265 Hemi w/ extractors. Dirrect injection, decent air filter, and a light foot. Should see some decent miles

I reckon go for the 202 if you've got 3 lying around, and they sound real nice with a set of headers.

With all the charger stuff, the engine in dads is a bit tired and needs a better tune, its a '78 CL 770 so it came from
factory with a bigger cam, sounds sweet as a mother****er. Oh and she's a 3 speed shift kitted auto.

G'day again, One of my 202's is a red motor. I've done a bit of work to it, head of a 186 stg 2 with big valves and double valves springs, .040"thou oversize flat tops pistons moly rings, 179 steel crank, std oil pump, torker 2 manifold, 350 and 500 holley, pacemakers extractors, straight cuts, electronic dizzy, crow cam 30/70, anti pump ups lifters. I had the aussie 4spd behind it. i had in the vh, head had destroy its self as I was just started to running it in. I have also got black 202 efi, thats stock but the bearings are stuff...And the blue motor is stock aswell....So I was thinkin of doing the blue motor I believe that they have 12 port head and a strong crank and rods, but i also been told that blue motors drop cylinders, SO how much would it cost me to do the motor up, Please keep in mind that the parts in the red motor are BRAND NEW!! Cheers Jason

Sounds like youve already spent the money on the red so id go with that. I assume you can mix and match the parts so why not build a strong motor, turbo with low psi and you have a bullet proof and pretty economic car that sounds pretty tough too

Answered your own question I think. Go for the red motor, sounds like it would be reliable with all the work done on it.

Ecotec. or an L67 if you want to spend the extra. I wouldn't bother with an old V8, if you do, get a 5litre.

the V6 is the best option out the bunch of engines you have. Good fuel economy, fuel injected, good power
a wagon diff won't fit a sedan unfortunately, shocky mounting position is totally different.

The guy changing the 6's to a 308 in his ute. I was helping him so he gave me the gearbox's for nothing! There's nothing wrong with the gearboxs......Cheers Jason

for power, fuel economy, drivability etc VR-later V6 with the supra 5 speed, gearbox will work with a new bellhousing. Else dont discount a 5L with a 2.78 diff you would be surprised witht he economy I get 10l/100 out of an EFI5L T5 3.45 gears on a trip. If you do alot of highway km I would look at the 5L option even a v6 with tall gears and 5 speed would be good, choose your cam to suit your driving and conditions you will drive it.
202s are a dead loss, $ for $ spent on a v6 or on a 202 the v6 will win every time in economy, power etc

    cheers

G'day mate, The buick motor that was in our wagon, we have replaced it with another motor but, now that motor is stuff, it using water so we are going to get rid of the wagon. But, we going to keep the frt end, computer and loom, for th vh commodore... We have replace the cam bearings, also brought race series gasket kit for $250. We give it a light honed, now we are going to buy new pistons for it. Bore at std for the moment it's going to be at .020"thou and, have the comp up to 9.5, camshaft has been regrind to. We dont know what, All we know is that the motor had only done 20hrs of running. More and likely been abused cause it keeps up to Gen's 3, and supercharged 6's!! So it's been abused form the start!! Come racing did some work to it, they should done the cam bearings while it was there..The auto has stg 2 shift kit and a stally. Also, has pacemaker's extractors , free flow cat. Basically, i dont want to get rid of this motor after that i just spent money on it so, we are going to make 2 cars into one. The vh has better a body than the wagon. Im going to buy another car for the missus nxt yr! Cheers Jason.........pls let me know how to get more power out of it. NO V8'S!! My vk has a V8.
