Default Legalities of fuel systems in the cabin

We've just started doin some work in the back of my VK wagz....and well I have no idea on the legalities of having fuel lines and pumps in the back...anyone know?

Oh and those fittings that apparently don't need hose clamps....do they work? This is the first time we've used them, and they seem tight, I just never knew ya could use these without hose clamps!

Not finished yet, but here's wat we've done so far.

    Hi,

I believe you musyt have a firewall between the pasengers and the fuel system.

Also I note that you have a battery box right next to the fuel pumps An ignition souse right next to a future petrol leak - not recommended.

I would be looking to place the pumps and fuel lines under the car, no matter what the difficulties are.

    For what its worth.

Pretty Sure they have to be out of the Cabin and protected by a firewall, I Would ring around at Engineering places that build cars to see what the laws are.

Yeah they have to be a sealed system inside a cabin where no air can get in to spread a fire. So for example if you have them in the bootthe boot must be sealed off from rest of the car. I would assume that wood or MDF is not going to be acceptable and metal would be what is needed.

AS For the fittings theyre good if theyre the hydraulic ones i've seen try pulling one off is impossible and for the low pressure fuel systems run theres no chance of a leak.

Yeh, as has been said, a fuel system is only legal inside a car if it's sealed from the cabin/passanger compartment (obviously a bit difficult in a wagon, much easier in a sedan). Do you carry a spare wheel? If not, I'd put it in the spare wheel well, that way once the spare wheel cover is on, it's sealed from the cabin. Further to that, the noise of those fuel pumps would drive everyone in the car crazy...

Also, it's not illegal to have a battery and fuel system close to each other in the same compartment, provided that the battery is in a sealed battery box and vented outside the vehicle.

Those fittings are great, no need for clamps. Try and get them back off, you won't be able to, the only way to get those hoses back off is to cut the hose

Thx for the replies guys. Putting the gear in the tyre well sounds like a good idea (especially as no spare I have will fit in there, unless ya don't want the lid to shut).....will just have to buy another surge tank that fits...the one in the pic is only a few days old lol.

The battery will be vented soon. Will get a battery that ya hook a tube up to which runs outside, like the VE battery.

As for the fittings, yeah I tried a bit of hose on it first and I had to cut it off lol, but could still rotate the hose, and was thinkin if the hose expands just slightly then it would come off easy. But I guess the hose probably won't expand.

Is it a road car ? why does it need the surge tank ? another thing with them fittings dont ever put a clamp on them as it will cut the hose.

Maybe he wants to put in burnout comps or take it out on a race track. It's his car he can do what he wants. There's plenty or worse mods you can do to cars

100% needs a firewall. i wouldn't drive it with this current setup.
You're probably wondering where you are. I'll tell you where you might be. You might be in the room that you die in. This is your wake up call.

LOL, you reckon a firewalls going to make much difference if it goes bang?
Firewall just stops fumes, in a VH thats an uphill battle at the best of times anyway. But yes, to be registered it needs a firewall.
