Have you replaced the plug leads?
Running rich could be vacum leak some place on the inlet manifold.

not sure about the spark or what car its in but since its a 304 i am guessing its a commy motor with efi, which would still give the fuel pump power while cranking even if the fuel pump relay is pulled once oil pressure is built up(i am not a wireing guru but i know power is somehow fed from the oil sender to the fuel pump as a back up once oil pressure is built up)
