Hey guys, I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right section but I would like some opinions.
Ok, 2 Fridays ago (12th Nov) My brother was driving my mothers car ('99 v6 Magna) and was at a round about waiting to turn right. A lady in a 4WD (with a bullbar) was doing approx 40-50k's and ended up smashing into the back of my mothers car. Her 4wd had no damage, on the other hand the back of mums car has been hit pretty bad (the boot won't even stay closed, we've tied it down). My brother is insured under mums insurance. Took it to the smash repairs that the insurer recommended to us on Monday. They said it looks like a write-off, but we've got to wait for the insurer to look at it. Basically long story short, theres about $3000 worth of damage there and I have a feeling it's going to be written off. Car is insured for $3,700. The magna has been a good reliable car for her but it's time to move on.
So the opinions I'm looking from you are: What is a good, decent & reliable 4cylinder? Mum wants to downgrade to a 4cyl because shes spending about $10 a day in fuel just to get to work and back (40 min drive each). Maybe even a decent v6 with good fuel economy (although I doubt there will be many around for $3-4k). Air Conditioning/Decent heater is a must
well in my opinion, the top 3 decent & reliable 4 cyl cars would be a nissan pulsar, toyota corrola or a mitsubishi lancer
Thanks mate. I've driven a Pulsar before (a '93 I think) and it was pretty good for a 4 cylinder. It had some guts! I haven't had much experience with a variety of 4 cylinders so I wasn't sure what would be great. I used to own a '94 Hyundai Sonata and that was a terrible car! Parts were expensive, very hard to find and it was gutless! Especially up hills.
toyota camry seems to be a reliable thing so ive read(the interweb would never lie)i had am import camry v6 but repairs and parts cost $$$$ get the aussie 4 banger version
Glad your borther is okay, I would go either a camry or a corrolla. (It's probably better if the car does get riden off. Becuase sometimes it will come back and it won't quite be the same and depending on the quality of panel beater paint could start cracking etc down the track and as it is magna's arent worth shit and lose their value very very quickly)
definately nissan pulsar runs on bugger fuel reliable, easy to get parts
I'm glad he is ok too. When the car got hit he was pushed into the round about. He was nearly throwing up when he rang mum straight after it happened thinking she was going to be angry. She understood that it wasn't his fault and things happen. While the magna has been a good reliable car, it's time to move on. She's looking to buy from the auctions but I just don't want her to end up with a dud car (e.g A Holden Astra...we used to own one and it gave us hell!) Thanks all for the suggestions so far. I'm helping mum out with the whole process so I'll will definitely show her everyones suggestions
Ok the Insurance Assessor has finally looked at it. The car is not going to be written off.
Heres the best part though: The smash repairs & insurance asked mum to contribute for paint!!! I was pretty angry when I first found this out. Mum shouldn't have to contribute a cent! The driver at fault's insurance should take care of that! It makes you wonder why we even have insurance if stuff like that is not covered!
Anyway long story short, They waived the fee for the paint (so they should!) and Mum gets her car back on Monday. The car is going to look off though....(As magnas are known to sh*t paint jobs) Most of the car's paint job is horrible (My VR has a better paint job even though it's faded in some areas!) and with the back now painted, the rest of the car is going to look like sh*t. Oh well, what can we do though...sh*t happens lol.
So now we're thinking of just re-registering the car, keeping it for a little while then sell it and get a 4-cylinder then. Not the outcome we expected (I was pretty sure the car was going to be written off).
Thankyou for all your suggestions & replies. We are still keeping those cars in mind as mum is determined to downgrade to a 4 cylinder.
i'd say go for a Corolla. even an older one would be good.
if they are cared for they will last forever pretty much, and the little 4cyl motor has enough grunt if you need it.
and the parts are easy to get. most wreckers also have the parts for it as there have been so many of them around.
get a vn as a daily you wont go wrong
lol a new oxygen sensor and ul get 700km per tank..
im joking.. devildrake good call though lol
Can't go wrong with a Japanese car.
