okay. here am i being bored brainless with how slow and gay my 84 vk is. and now i have the financial backing to afford a $20,000 loan from a bank to get a car thats worth driving and spending money on.\
but. when i think about it more. if i was to buy a modern n/a six. id turf it the moment i get off my p's wanting either a turbo. or an 8. so. the whole point to this thread being-
does anyone actually know anything about the issues ill have with driving a standard looking xr6 turbo or an ss of some sort.
is there any point to insurance at all, as i would have a car that im not allowed to drive.
will i still have TAC cover if i crash it?
things like that.
i know people are doing it. i see it everyday. but do you all just not car or is there a way around in this bs that the nobheads in canberra keep dreaming up for "safer roads"...
cheers
I can't imagine ANY insurance company would cover you for a car that you can't legally drive. I'd imagine the people who are somehow getting away with it are probably doing it through some loophole such as getting it registered in their parents' name. Seriously I'd just wait...once you get off your P's it'll not only be a lot easier to insure it, but also drive it without being worried about getting done over by the cops.
so you wanna drive a v8 on your p's is kinda the subject your on here?
if so police arnt really stuiped, they can tell a v8 or something when they see one and if it has p plate chances are your gonna get pulled over
or if your going to drive one without p plates well police probly wont look twice, but then if the unfortanant happens and you do get pulled over, you will get done for a v8 plus an addional fine and points for no p plates
also you can get away with driving and 8 for so long on your p's, and you might never get caught, but if you crash it while your driving and the police come, one of the first things they look at is the licences of those involved and the cars they were driving, and you might be held more liable, hope that sums up what you wanted to here, and if your on your p's and your on a bit of a budget, why not just buy a nice vs or something and do it up, then once you have your full licence get a better car then.
If you had the money without a loan, sure..... If you crash then its your fault your insurance wont cover you. However then you wont be in debt paying for a car you dont have.
If you had the money i would say buy the car, drive your vk until you get off your p's and do up the other one while you cant drive it.
cheers both for the input.
and luke. yeh. pretty much is the point. but come on. lets face it. none of us have stock as a rock, plaplate legal cars. weve all got something done to them that pushes the "no performance enhancing mods" line. what im saying is the althogh you might not have much done on the out side. you may have a nutcase motor in it which is visibly the same to an insurance bloke.
aaaand having an xr6 turbo. badges are easily pulled of, and you could have a go at the engine bay hiding everything that says turbo on it and putting a bigger heatsheild over the turbo itself. leaving it an "n/a" xr6 to any pissed off copper standing in the rain trying to defect my car...
Plenty of loop holes in the P plater laws......some of my friends that work for holden, ford and toyota have turbo/8 cylinder exemptions because it's a requirement of thier job to test drive customers vechiles which in turns might be one of the types mentioned previously. I have a 8 cylinder exemption because most of the work vechiles are v6's and v8's. I tried to get turbo exemption but we don't have any petrol turbo vechiles only the diesel turbo vechiles.
regarding the "hide turbo badges. etc" idea, police can easily check your rego and see if the car is a turbo via that route. It'd be very pointless.
Kuzman's Supercharged SV6 - MACE TUNED
well then yeah if you think you can cover it up go for it, i have contemplated driving 8's on my p's but always end up with the same conclusion, its not worth it
yeah and what static said, if the insurence wont cover you in a crash your screwed
Off topic, but nothing to do with Canberra mate. State Govt's. Here in Canberra P platers can drive any car, to the posted speed limit, with any amount of passengers at any time. As well as having the option to get rid of your p plates and gain 4 points after 6 months.
Enjoy..![]()
nathans VY Calais - 'Calais 2.0' | VT Equipe | VS Calais **SOLD!**
pretty much ^^^ now im just more pissed about the laws!!
Laws over in WA are even easier
Untill december when 1st year P platers only get 4 points and 2nd year they have 7 otherwise you can drive whatever you want.
As for loopholes there are a few that are out there but honestly just wait till ur off ur P's and have some $ in the bank instead of borrowing for it.
im sick of my VT S-Pack and wanting it faster. But end of the day, you drive a turbo or an 8 and you crash, your f**ked...like proper f**ked. Insurance wont help, cops will fine you, biggest debt ever and might go on your personal profile the cops have (assuming, not sure)
I know you guys wanna drive really really really fast and i don't wanna start a flamewar but these rules are in place for a reason.
EDIT: come to think of it a 6 is going to reach the same speeds as an 8.
Carry on.
hey buddy, get it insured and regod in ur parrents names, and get a exemption for work.. mines under dads![]()
Insurance will insure the car for you no problem, but if you make an at fault claim and your the driver then they will refuse to pay it.
Pretty much what was said above.
If you are on your P's and you have those laws in place, there is no way around the No V8, No Turbo, No Supercharger rule unless your work requires you to drive one, and even then if you are caught driving on a Saturday night in your V8 and you cant give a damn good reason as to why you are driving a V8 outside of work obligations you will be in the shit.
As far as Insurance goes. Insurance companies will happily take your money. The very moment it comes to paying out if you crash they are going to turn around and say "Oh, you arent allowed to drive that" and say thanks for the cash. Im insured with my CAI, however I know dam well as soon as I crash, they are going to see its an OTRCAI without a MAF and say thanks for the cash. You have to understand that just because they are taking your money doesnt mean they are going to pay out.
Just wait till you can legally drive it. If you are going to get a loan for 20 grand you dont want to drive that car around without Insurance because thats the kind of move thats gets you put on the short bus.
dont even bother with getting an exemption, unless you can 100% prove its work related you may as well not even bother, and even then as grennan said you can still get caught and in trouble for driving it out of your restricted times, how long you gotta wait for your full licence?
Anyone missing the point that black_84vk is asking how can I break the law and get away with it???
Seriously, as soon as you say you are a P plater, insurance will go through the roof.
Let’s say it a P plater legal car, as soon as you say its modified your insurance premium will go up... even possibly cancelled.
As soon as you say it's a Turbo/V8 your insurance will be voided and you will pay ALL costs(medical & other vehicles) if you smash... this could be in the millions of dollars if you add killing someone or permanently injure someone you twit.
TAC/Greenslip/CTP/whatever it is called wherever you live(...and I hope it’s nowhere near me you turkey) does not cover you if the State laws on P plater rules are broken.
Now personally speaking... I hope you never get caught and nothing goes wrong(crash/hurt anyone)... but if something does go wrong it will destroy any future life/plans you have for yourself and possibly your familys as you are clearly immature.
i suggest get a bf xr6 6 speed auto. its 190kw with the high gear ratio 6 speed. put a custom intake with a remap ecu and ur lookin 215kw
i had that and lost my licence for 12 months so that says it all
and my insurance under my name was 1400![]()
12 months?must of been hitten some big figures there haha how fast were you goin?
A lot of p platers get away with driving vl turbos by buying non factory vl turbos and converting them to turbo and running hidden intercoolers. Therefor it comes up on cops computers as a n/a 6 and they will never have a reason to open the bonet. But your ####ed if you have a prang.

Yep, it is an exercise that is fraught with danger. Apart from the fact it is illegal, you may find yourself in a whole heap of financial woe if you have a prang and the insurance mob says they will not accept any claim. It's only 3 years to wait - save more coin and get something sensational when you are legally entitled to drive it - the satisfaction level is much greater. Better than constantly looking over your shoulder for blue and red lights....
