Default Tips on removing Gas Setup

    Hey guys,

Am currently stripping a VL 200 series and am up to the stage of removing the LPG setup.

Any tips or advice for someone removing the gas (other than do not smoke)?

Do all tanks have a safe way of degassing? Do i need any special tools etc??

Any info appreciated, cheers in advance....

    Hi there CustomCruising,

I have a complete original Holden Factory Workshop Manual for the VR Series LPG System. I don't think that it would be any different from the VL. Don't quote me on that. I'm only assuming. Someone else here might know more.

I'm in the process of digitizing it. I can post up a link to a torrent once I have completed it, if that would help. It would be in PDF format.

It’s the complete install / removal and servicing manual, originally printed by Holden. Fully illustrated, step by step instruction and procedures. You can't go wrong.

It’s out of print now and I spoke with Holden Service Department. They have no problem with it being digitized and freely distributed; the copyrights are no longer covered.

If you would like me to send you a link, let me know.

    Cheers

    Simmo...

P.S Yes there is a safe way to empty the whole system and reclaim the LPG until you are ready to install and fill it up. You will need some special tools, which I believe you can hire. I've seen them for refrigerant gas reclaiming, should be the same tool; maybe just different fittings.

It's all shown in the workshop manual.

But I will warn you to READ & RE-READ the entire manual (It’s not big) and make sure that you are comfortable with the job. After all it is LPG. I don't want you blowing yourself up and half the suburb along with you.

Saying that! if I do post this manual. I take NO responsibility for its content and how you guys use this information.

I'm just doing me bit to put the published information out there into the ether (so to speak)

If you lock off the tank, then you only should have the gas that's i the service lines etc to deal with. Wherever you choose to do it, make sure the area is well ventilated. When it hits the atmosphere, LPG expands to something like 240 times its size. It likes to hug the ground, and roll places. When i disconnected my system i ran the tank as dry as possible, wheeled the car up the street to an abandoned block away from houses and disconnected the lines there. No way i was risking an errant piece of gas rolling under the house, hitting a pilot light and blowing the house off its foundations.

What I do when I take out an engine and need to disconnect the gas is lock off the tank then start the car and run it until it does, then start it on petrol and give it a rev and try and flick it back over to gas till it wont run anymore...... That will get rid of most/all the gas in the lines

Then it should all be easy from there on.

ive removed gas systems a few times without emptying lines etc just shut down the gas at the tank and start unbolting stuff in a well ventilated area and as you said dont smoke never had a problem but usually youll have to cut the flanged bit of the end of the main line if they ave fed it through the chassis as they seem to drill it just big enough for the line and flange /put the joint on after.
