The later Supra boxes are stronger. The early ones are a W series box the later are R series which are also used in some landcruisers and prados with different ratios. Landcruiser owners will tell you they are weak, but they will take a fair bit of punishment on a two wheel drive vehicle. People use either a W or R series gearbox when putting a V8 in a Hilux 4X4 so it should last in a Commodore that wont have the traction of a 4X4.
If your gonna do it make sure its a Steel case box, the alloy ones tend to split the casings with power.
They say that the W58 gearbox is the strongest tho, but im skeptical.
Pretty sure you want the one with 21 spline output shaft designated P51 or W50
They are strong but better in a lighter car with less loading, so if its going in an early model commodore should be ok.
Depends on how much power you intend to put thru it and if you abuse it or not.
Try getting one from 6 cylinder Coronas and imported Crowns and in these applications they were fitted with a heavier-duty needle roller bearing in the front cluster.
But most of the time you cant tell unless you pull them apart, but they are cheap enough anyway if you can find them.

1ST – 3.00:1 1ST – 3.29:1 1ST – 3.52:1 1ST – 3.62:1
2ND – 1.99:1 2ND – 2.04:1 2ND – 2.05:1 2ND – 2.04:1
3RD – 1.39:1 3RD – 1.39:1 3RD – 1.39:1 3RD – 1.39:1
4TH – 1.00:1 4TH – 1.00:1 4TH – 1.00:1 4TH – 1.00:1
5TH – .85:1 5TH – .85:1 5TH – .85:1 5TH – .85:1
Thanks guys for your help. I'm thinking putting it in my vh commodore that has Holden 253 blue, which only has a stage 2 cam, it's nothing special. We will be doing alot of highway cruzing, and with the extra gears it would be better than the 3 spd trimatic. And, also has 3.08 diff ratio too.......Cheers Jason

ally case with steal sandwhich gearplate is strong as if you dont drop the clutch or tow/thrash in 5th doesnt take bugger all to kill fifth gear used to run supra boxes behind my 308 vk and a 350 chev hz ute good if you are nice to them.mine just had a 3 speed front shaft welded to the toyota one works great on a mild 308
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable

It looks to be a Celica 5 Speed "W50" but they were also used in early model supra's.
Yes it can be used but if you start doing big clutch dumpies, dont blame me if it breaks something.
THANK HEAPS!! Nah, I won't blame you.. It was givin to me, and i had no idea what it was. So it be alrite behind my mild 253. How much power can they take? Cheers Jason

If you drive them respectably they last along time, load them up, like accelerating in too lower gear (like trying to pull away doing 40kmh in 3rd instead of second) and decelerating hard (instead of using the brakes) or labouring in 5th gear instead of driving in 4th or 3rd will wear any box but will destroy one of these if it already has bearing wear.
well.. i always thought supra boxes were strong.. guess not.
thanks vr38 for your reply mate. I'm still thinking about it, I don't want to put it in the car and later it's going to explodes across the road. If you know what i mean. Its has a 6 cylinder bell housing on it.

T5 will be about the best 5 speed you will get for a decent price. Will live fine behind a mild-strong 253.
lol ive destroyed T5's with a red 179 HP. the phillipino 4 speed i had behind it in the end was tough as nails...that pic u have looks to be the alloy case celica 5 speed...i happen to have a steel case if your interested(no bell housing/yoke...just the box & shifter) they are a good box man, but like any box, they will only survive as long as you let them. whats wrong with the m21? 2nd and 4th is longer than that of a T5 and so long as you weld the shifter up good and keep your linkage setup tight you shouldn't have any troubles.
lol @ 1400 hp+ from a 253....
