Had the fuel pump die on me the other day and with hot weather, etc in Melbourne I decided to get somebody out to the car at work (where the pump died after being bought back to life in a shopping centre car park)
Fuel pump was installed and car was ok on the roadtest and the next two days
Drove into the city Friday arvo to hit the town with a friend and upon returning to my car it wouldn't fire up
Fuel levels on both gauge and digital display showed there was more than enough fuel in the car (1/4 tank) and I couldn't find any dodgy relays, etc so yet another call to RACV to come out (bloody 4am in the morning, least it was a nice balmy night)
He tries his test sequence then checks the fuel gauge again and suggests we try adding in some fuel and of course it fires into life
So obviously the mechanic has either stuffed up the float level or done something to the sender unit as on the previous fuel pump red light for low fuel would come on just above the red line (and L3 dash was programmed with a fuel 'reserve' as well)
My problem is I don't trust him to come back and do the work but they have the 'first right of repair'
I'm thinking rather than just fixing up the float level or sender they should install another brand new pump as if this one has already been run dry it's obviously going to shorten it's life
What amazes me the most though is I managed to get all the way to my mates place without any classic signs of low fuel (car was running a little rough but it always has been in heavy traffic on hot days
The float level rod is strong wire so he cant of bent that - but the tag that sets the "low" fuel can be moved real easy. If this has been bent up some then the float will settle down at 1/4 tank and never move again. So no warning light at all.
I'd say he's fitted the pump/sender incorrectly (almost impossible) or moved the tag for the float stop.
