Hi all im a newbie to this forum so take it easy if i get something wrong
Im an 18 year old victorian, a few months away from moving on to my green P plates.
I need advice on buying a car. Im mostly looking at VY and VZ's, but im not set on them. Im coming off a 97' c200 mercedes, so im not used to anything that hammers but i still want to be able to muck around and have some fun.
Ive got around 10k to spend, give or take 2 grand.
In a nutshell im asking wether the difference between the vy ecotec and the vz alloytec would be noticeable, and if i should spend slightly more to get the newer motor, or slightly less to get the ecotec and save money.
Thought id ask the guys and girls who know what they are talking about, so what are your thoughts?
oh and cant be v8 or supercharged, p plate restrictions rule that out
Any advice would be extremely helpful.
Thanks

Just bought a 2004 VY Berlina. Thanks for the help guys (sarcasm)
There's good and bad in both the new alloy tech are prone to bottom end drama's and the emotechs i mean alloytech's are bad for Waterloss and overheating such as head gaskets....
sounds like a good pick up mate, what did you pay for it?
These things are never cut and dried however I would far prefer an exceptionally well looked after low KM VY over a not so flash VZ.
Reaper
Yeah that was my theory buying this one reaper
Got it for just on 10k so yeah it was a good pickup. Any suggestions on what I should mod to get some extra power if I have about a grnand to spend? Not much I know haha
Oil change and filter, plugs and leads, trans oil and filter, fuel filter, bottle of injector cleaner.
Once that is done.
Cat back, high ratio rockers, Lukey air filter, 25mm manifold spacer.
Around $800 all up.
What kind of power boost would that get me 2DIE? I know it wouldn't be massive but anything helps haha?
Im pretty happy with all those things and Im getting a tuned memcal in the next few days too. Its a lot more responsive and gives you enough power to move the car as quick as necessary.
It has more guts than my bros V8 304 but thats a pretty old motor and everything is stock, it wont come close to newer V8s though.
LOL what's that corolla running?
dgray, what you want to do first for more power is give it a good service, pretty much what 2DIE said though he explained it all fully. When the car is running 100% in standard form and has as much power as it can without being modified you can start modifying it. Have a look at MACE's products, the manifold mods tend to help with low down torque and get you a couple extra kw.
My advice would of been not to buy a Holden.

To the OP good choice on the VY. Wouldn't want to be changing a thermostat in an Alloytech, stuff that as a joke, what were GM Thinking?
If it's not a Symptom its not relevant, and if its not relevant I don't care!
Haha I'd never expect to get anywhere close to a v8 with that sort of moneythanks for the advice guys definetly appreciated. If I beleived everything I hear then I guess I shoulda gotten pickled's nans corolla lol
