    Default choosing a dog breed?

Hey all I'm lookin at gettin a new pup soon and unsure on what to get. What I'm after is a medium size smart guard dog, prefer one that doesn't loose bulk hair and slober everywhere, its got to be able to stand its ground, protect its owners and It's yard but aswell get along with some other dogs. I'm thinkin along the lines of an American bulldog, blue heeler or doberman but are wanting to hear your thoughts as well. All advice, stories will help cheers

    Get a Beagle!..

Ok it sounds stupid, but hear me out. We have 20 month old beagle, he was originally bread for hunting so is a little bigger than your average house pet beagle (i.e. bulkier, as were both his parents), he is loyal, smart but also very protective especially of the Lisa and the Baby. My missus and I always joke that he walks around with that macho staffy stance (chest out); he is happy to play around with bigger dogs, and whilling to eat any Indian door knockers that come within 20ft of the front door.

Best of all, he is fantastic with the little one. :-)

I'd say a German Shepherd, short-haired one male or female it doesn't matter there both excellent guard dogs always alert ready for anything.
I've had mine for just over a year now and he's starting to really bulk up. Loves going for walks, beach, kids, and all that... but it really comes down to how you train them and how much time your willing to give them.
My friends have rotties, irish wolfhounds, etc. but looks and personality I'd take a german shepherd over any breed. Smartest dogs I know, and easy to train.

we used to have a female german shepherd and she was the best dog ever, period. she was great with little kids, always wanted to play and loved going for walks and drives in the car. she was extremely smart and loyal, and well trained. oh and she was the most fantastic guard dog! whenever someone came to the front door (myself included) she would rush them, if it was someone she knew she would turn into the biggest sook and just wanted a stroke and play with the ball. if it was someone she didnt know she would growl and bark at them, if they came in the house (like my grandparents the 1st time they met her), she would sit infront of them for about half an hour and would growl or bark at them if they moved towards one of us. after about half hour and she realised they went a threat she would turn into a super sook again. it really does depend how you train and treat them
