I want to use a V6 Commodore diff in our rod which should suit our 4M Toyota Crown engine and 3 speed auto so can anyone tell me if the different commodore models differ in width at all.
Several year ago we had a lend of a VP diff housing and this was a perfect fit under the chassis so I'm hoping a diff from a latter model will also fit.
Looks like I posted a hard on here hey or does anyone know of a tech site with all the specifications for the Commodores.
About the only thing I can tell you is that the VN and VP diffs are about an inch narrower in width than the VR and VS diffs,other than this they are exactly the same.Ive seen a VN diff in a VS,with normal chaser rims fitted, and it looked stupid,it was too narrow and the insides of the tyres scrubbed.I always though they were all exactly the same from VN to VS,but apparently the VR/VS had a slightly wider track than the earlier models.Hence the slightly wider diff.
VK
VL
VN->VS
all have different widths
with a borg warner from a VK being 15mm narrower each side than a VL. and a VN->VS diff being 25mm wider each side than a VL.
For your intents and purposes - any diff from VN->VS will fit.
Ute & Wagon vs sedan have different mounts for the shocks, too - with the wagons having an 'angled' shock setup.
Additionally, all the non-special (i.e. non hsv/non export etc) cars ran 3.08 gears.
Thanks guys, we'll go with a VS cause a little extra width between the tyre and the chassis would be better.

Travelled 300klms each way and bought a diff in great condition for $400, now to tack on the suspension mounts and have a professional welder weld it up.
