    Default 5L fuel economy

Hey guys. just have some nerves before possible buying my first v8, Pretty excited to say the least. Anyway im wondering how many k's roughly i should get per tank from a vs 5l. It has 3.9 diff gears and some sort of cam and a full manualiesd auto.
Cheers, i know this could have been in the vs section but 5l's came out in a few cars and plus past owners may have some usefil info

If it's cammed, has an exhaust (?) and is your first V8, don't expect great economy! lol

    pretty vague question
so i could just say lots
but what do you drive now to compare it too
if you put your foot down everywhere its gonna chew more fuel then if you just cruised everywhere
i got 700 klms out of my vp calais on a trip to sydney from brisbane and gearbox started slipping about the last 100 kays of that
    chip exhaust stock otherwise

Expect horrible economy on the 5L. I have owned three and would be lucky to get 300-400 out of a tank of fuel. I had a 6L that drank less!

The fuel economy would differ heaps from 5L to 5L. Aircon on, outside temperature, age of car, condition of car, mods to car, fuel in car and finally the driver of the car would affect the fuel economy a fair bit.

Expect the worst and you will hopefully be surprised!

    450k's . 60litres.
    13.33litres per 100K's , thats honestly a good consumption! My V6 commodore, averages 15litres per 100K..
Take it easy on the throttle and you'll see good consumption... Being a V8.. Living in a small-town with a lead foot would not be good :P

Average fuel consumption of a car is around 9-17L per 100k.

On the highway, i get under 10l/100k's, i got just over 800 K's out of an 80 litre tank of fuel when i went away at christmas and still had about 10 litres in the tank when i filled up again. Around town, couldn't really tell you, i just fill it up when it's empty lol.

You gotta take into thought about the diff gears too, means even slight accelleration will still rev it haha

3.9 diff gears are going to cost you fuel.
I get around 10L/100 on the highway with a 5spd manual & 3.08 diff gears
I don't drive around town much anymore, so not sure what the city cycle is

cam + 3.9's + manualised auto = lots of fuel would be my guess. a big stallie (especially one without a lock up clutch) wont do your economy any favours either.

not really comparing apples with apples here but anyway.. i got a 5L vs, reasonably fresh motor with a tiny cam, T5 and 3.7's. if i drive like an old woman i can do 400 highway kays on a little over 1/2 a tank. that wont happen around town though!

as stated. 5L's can be good on fuel but it all depends on the parts in the combo

Yeah i knew the diff gears were going to be a killer. I am considering changing them so something a little (smaller?) for the highways etc, cause i dont wanna be going along at 110 clicks and for it to be revving its tits off

My 5L has just over 201,000 kms on it now, standard aside from Mace CAI and 2.5 inch single cat back, auto & lsd 3.08 rear. It is serviced every 5,000 kms (and has been sinced I bought it 12+ years ago with 62,000 kms on it)

I don't thrash it but do enjoy driving a V8 so it gets a bit here and there. With a combination of peak hour and freeway/hwy driving I normally get low to mid 13 ltrs per 100km (generally between 470 & 490 kms for around 63/64 litres to fill) and that's with a/c on a lot at the moment as well.

Occassionally it might dip below 13 but not that often.

With the auto & 3.08 rear it sits just under 2,000 rpm at 100 ks.

Its a 5L v8... i wouldnt be getting too bothered about the economy.

had mine tuned up as best it can... heaps better to drive round town, but over all city econ is only a bit better. Highway is much improved tho.

A mate recently bought a VS SS 5spd with shagged injectors and reg, timing out, o2 sensor dead, gutted cat... he was getting 280 from a full tank (stock tank)... so i suppose you could see that as near to worst case

I think you should just drive it and enjoy the sound!!

Though... if you have to fill up every couple hundred km's then you have an issue that needs attention lol

if its just gonna be used predominantly around town then i'd just leave it. IMO they will only cause it to chew a bit more juice on the open road
