    Default Drop Tanks ?

    Hi guys,

May be a stupid question but I'm curious.
With Drop tanks, I'd assume they're purely used to provide a larger fuel tank, is there any other reason for them??

Also, as something random... has anyone seen/fitted a drop tank to a VT Commodore.
Not exactly going to go out and do it, but wondered whether it'd look ridiculous or not or if it's even possible.

I think people just like the look of them, and the extra fuel it provides..
I dont think It would work on a VT due to the fact most new cars have the tank fitted to one side and the fact the back bumpers are lower then what a drop tank would be, You wouldnt notice it.. Only be good for more petrol..

hey guys I am interested also, I have the tank on my vx paonted silver at the moment and you can see it from underneath (the car has also been lowered 50mm) the other advantage I see in a custom drop tankn would be that you could centre the tank for better handling and to be able to run the exhaust on both sides. IMHO I beleive by doing this you would probably be able to keep the same capacity doing it this way but I doubt you would get much more due to clearance issues

I'm not worried about the fuel capacity. But I've wondered what a VT would look like with a drop tank hanging out, whether it'd look 'PHAT' or shithouse.

You could probably get one made up for ět. My guess is that it would cost you around $800 - $1000. But while you get more fuel, you also get more weight and a big cost at the bowser to fill it.

More weight is correct and as long as the volume is greater than standard then yoiu will get more fuel and yes pay more to fill it at the pump however you can travel further on a larger amount of fuel so the cost at the bowser is relative. More weight can be potentially offset by weight reductions in other areas. More weight is definatgely an issue but i figuire that with a custom tank the weight itself would only be a minor issue if the handling can be improved through moving the tank to the centre of the vehicle and potentially forward as well.

Fairly certain the need to be self sealing if made from alloy.

I had one made donkeys ago for a torana, cost me $800. If they're not baffled they'll cause mad tank slapers if you get frisky. Mine was 120ltrs, and the torana averaged maybe 450km to a tank
