Default Vicroads P plate car database

I dont know if this has been discussed before but I saw this article in the age this morning and though it was interesting. for those who cant be bothered reading it. it starts with saying look at the new database vicroads has released of car p platers can and cannot drive Probationary vehicle database : VicRoads and then says how stupid these laws are.

This is a common enough debate.

has anybody thought of getting all the car forums and clubs together to lobby the govt to change the laws?

OK for P-platers, but as fast as a Ferrari

p plate laws are messed up.
you can go drive a Turbo diesel with alot of power but cant drive an old v8 with not alot of power.
but hey i doubt they will change and one day P Platers will be restricted to 4cyl cars with less then 80kW of power because v6 cars are the ones P Platers are crashing now...

i was reading a while back you can drive a turbo diesel Audi with more power then a ferrari on your P's but cant drive an old WB or F100 Ute.
you could even drive a Lotus Elise as its a 4cyl car.... i know its not in most peoples capabilities but still, not really fair

well there are some commenters on the article that say that all P platers should be restricted to 4 cyl cars because "thats all they need"

I cant speak for any other P plater but my self but I know I drive a Commodore because its one of the few cars I can fit it in comfortably. I recently smashed my commo ( rear ended someone in stop start traffic) and am driving dads hatchback and hate it its so cramped. I would own a smaller car if i fitted well in one. god knows it would make reverse parking easier and save me heaps of money on fuel but my commo is what I fit in. The extra grunt of (real or not) of the rear drive V6 is just a bonus.

It's funny, the restrict the cars P PLaters can and cannot drive but I wonder what the statistics really say, How many people actually wrote themselves off in a V8 compared to a 6 before they changed the restrictions?

And now as you stated the majority of deaths are in a 6, that is probably because its the most commonly available engine size that meets the restrictions.

They could restrict P Platers to Roller Skates and there would still be deaths, allot of it is just a lack of experience combined with bad luck, the only smart thing they have done is changed the training requirments, not that it's perfect, but better.

The hardest bit about restricting P platers to Roller Skates is they would all have to tell their parents they are gay :P

I notice the LJ XU1 Torana is on the approved list, I am sure they would have a lot more performance than say a stock early model V8. Not that many P platers would be able to afford one,
but makes for an interesting comparison.

i dont see the point in these rules, fine no v8.....but why is a VT-VY s-pac super6 not allowed? i seems stupid to me when they only have 171kw in the case of a VX only and extra 15kw than a 6........and all the BA/BF XR6 and VZ/VE 6's have like 190+++++?

the rules need to be power to weight. thats it. and possibly capacity to weight also. like they do with bikes.

lol.... It is funny, but true....

Example. BOV's are illegal, for some unknown reason the EPA thinks that venting compressed air is bad. (BOV=Blow Of Valve).

What I really can't comprehend is how all the sh**box rust buckets out there are allowed to be deathtraps on our roads,
but the second someone with actual passion changes anything on their car they are deemed a hazard to society.
And I hate that our country has become the softest in the first world (IMO) I dream of the day when we get a petrol head
    prime minister.
