Default My Diff Is Whiring, Probably On Its Last Legs. Options?

    Hey everybody on JC.
I have a VS S Pac Ute with a factory optioned LSD.
When i bought the ute the diff had a slight whirring sound in it, now it just gets louder and louder.
I'm pretty sure it's on it's last legs.
What are my options to do next? And roughly how much am i looking at?
Should i recondition? rebuild? buy new? secondhand?
    Change gearing? etc...
I am new to the diff world, so any help appreciated.
    Cheers, tim005

It is more than likely just a worn carrier bearing so the diff wont need to be completely rebuilt. If this is the problem then you wont have to worry about touching the pinion bearings and re shimming them. Its probably best to get someone experienced with diffs to have a look before going out and buying a new one.

Thanks mate, i was hoping someone would reply to ease my mind somewhat. I know it's my best bet to go get it professionally looked at, but i thought i might open a thread over the weekend until the shop re-open on monday so i can properly diagnose the problem.
I hope it's what you're suggesting mate. Thanks heaps.

just did mine last weekend, most diffs i ever see have stuffed pinion bearings, i id mine for $130, but then again, i am a mechanic, so thats what i do lol, but to get a workhop to fit new bearings should cost you abot $160 for the parts, $300 lab, and about $50 worth of oil, but the end result is a quiet diff
