I'm not sure if this has been covered or not but as the title states, i have a bit of a gripe with potholes..
the other day i was driving home about 11pm, down a road that is fairly poorly lit ( thats an understatement ) and to my surprise half way down the road, doing the 70k speed limit a huge bang. I hit a pothole about, a big enough pothole to slow the car down and throw me into the other lane.. i got out of the car after pulling over and noticed my rim is completely screwed, huge buckle each side and a crack through it. now the car shakes at certain speeds and when im driving straight my steering wheel is about a quarter turn to one side ( this shits me off far more than it should ) My question is, is this a council issue? will the council reimburse for the cost of the damage to the car?
I'm thinking they should if its a council road, if not i'll have to give old mate at Today Tonight or ACA a call.
Cheers for any answers or help

Same thing happened to my dads old XR6 turbo ute the day after he bought brand new 19s. Hit a pothole and split two of the rims, they were complete write offs. Hammered the council with numerous phone calls and emails and they ended up replacing all 4 19s![]()
Score! I'm hoping it works out. I've enquired with the council as to whether or not its their road, still waiting on a reply.. and sent them a nice long couple of emails.. It's a bit of a prick to replace too, went to village motors for a quote on a new wheel and its 480 per wheel without rubber, or bridgestone 600 for all four without tyres

Ive gone down a poorly lit road with potholes left from unmarked road works and crshed the bike.
Took a few weeks but the councol came to the party n paid for everything.
Just get on there backs about it
Have the same bloody problem with one of the roads that takes me home. (Cause I live outside of the city) Been here for 13 years and despite having fixed every other friggen area on that damn road, respraying the lines on the part where it needs to be RE DONE ENTIRELY isn't going to fix the friggen problem you scumbag council!!!!
Yes there's my rant!
A gold VT, NSW plates, and a lead foot allergic to brakes, it's a race against the settin' Sun.
Would seem as though the race against the 'setting sun' won.. Rest in Peace Jazz. 1999 - 2011
A guy who used to regularly cruise with us in Vic had one of his 20's crack after hitting the notorious "Monash Speedbump". Its a part of the Monash Freeway where 2 of the roadwork sections join and there was a huge bump. He got his rim replaced by Vicroads but it was an absolute nightmare getting it done. It is possible but it really depends on how lucky you are.
mate i know where you coming from, really f,s me of when i have to on the continual look out for pot holes, steps in the road just crap road works in general here when running 20,s with 30 profile, anyway like the other guy said hammer the crap out of council to they cough up,goodluck

potholes.... dont get me started.
same spot in my street has been fixed countless times, at one stage it was 6 times in less then 2 months! (when it rained they couldnt bother to fill it and all properly)
really wish they could just do it properly
hopefully it works out for you
They're only 18's on standard profile tyres, nothing too over the top, i've been given a claim number and am waiting on a call from the operations officer or something, got a call from one bloke just saying the road would be fixed ASAP.. Told him that didnt really help with my car looking like shit on stockies and steering like a shopping cart..

that sucks dude.. let us know how you go.. pot holes shit me you pay tax why the #### cant they fix the roads
I like how they're spending all this money on putting sensors in the ground so that it tells parking inspecters the SECOND your car is over the time limit, and they can spend god knows how much to paint the local town hall (which was painted only 5 years ago max!) But they can't spend a couple bucks taking care of the road.
Ohh, better do something about the road toll (pot holes + poorly finished county roads, cracked edges etc) but again, why spend a little bit of money on that when the money would be so much better spent on revenue cameras
Been Down that road before, The Council came back and said sorry they cant keep up with repair the roads due to the rain that happened 2 weeks ago, So had to buy new tyres, my rim was ok though. But that kind of damage FARK! Check your strut tower make sure its not cracked i would be worried about that more.
Finally got a reply after a few phone calls and Emails, apparently i need to get a quote for the damage and lodge an insurance claim through the council, though the bloke tells me it's not guaranteed to be paid out.. I'm thinking my odds have to be semi ok if they're wanting me to at least make a claim.

man, I'm pissed about one wheel. But two in two days, that sucks. I sent my first email just to Brisbane city council, as long as its one of the councils roads i'd imagine just the same kinda deal in a different state, i cant remember what the department was but it was just on the councils site under reporting issues with roads, hope that helps.

I feel for you mate, this is almost like re-living the nightmare I had about a month ago. Was driving home at about 11 pm, 70 km/h then suddenly this huge BANG! A moment before the hit felt like I gained some air, followed by that back-breaking slam... bloody hell, pothole I thought. Fortunately, neither rims nor steering got damaged, thought I got lucky.
Well... no. A week later found radiator fluid leaking, radiator cracked. Fixed that. A week later, sensors flashed to "Service Vehicle Soon", took it in fixed that. Some wires got loose according to them, most likely from the bang. Waiting for anymore unexpected nasty surprises... hope they iron them all out in the next service.
I'd say yes see it to the council. They built the roads, they should be sure it lives up to the proper standards of safety. Taking responsibility like that doesn't seem to work here in Saudi Arabia. I asked my dad about contacting the council, said that that stuff doesn't work. Well, you're in Aussie. At least you have some form of justice there as compared to here.
Hope it works out for you mate, best of luck!
The only Exec in Saudi that's now properly badged!
same problem here and the council can go f.... themselves i emailed, rang ,argued to the point i wanted to kill someone, two 18 tyres one front rim another wheel alignement anyway about 1600 dollars worth, tyres only had 1500ks on them in the end went through insurance and hope insurance get there money of the council so i can get my excess back, word of advice if you have time FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!! and get your money, cause they spend our rates/rego (RTA) on bullshit and cameras
Yeah friend of mine had the same problem hit a pothole at 100kmh veered off the road thankfully not hurt. Something needs to be done bloody riddiculous
If this sort of thing happens to you, there are a couple of things you need to consider before making any approaches.
Responsibility for road maintenance depends on the classification of the road. If it's a highway or major route, it will probably be the responsibility of the State Government department that builds roads (eg in NSW it's the RTA). If it's a minor road, it will be the local council's responsibility.
If you have comprehensive insurance, you may be covered for damage incurred due to poor road conditions - check your policy or ask at your local branch. If you are covered, you also need to know if you will suffer any loss of no-claim bonus and whether the company pursues the "owner" of the road for compensation.
If you have a camera with you at the time of the incident, take pics of the pothole, the road as you approach it (so that you can prove it was dangerous/big/diffcult to see/impossible to avoid), the area immediately surrounding the pothole (so that the site can be readily identified)and any damage to your car. Ideally, your pics will have a dating system to prove when they were taken. These will be great support to you when you try to get compensation from the road owner, or will support an insurance claim.
Our police vehicles used to incur damage from road debris and we were able to claim on the Department's insurance policy for complete repairs. If you are with the right company, that might apply to you as well.
Yea I had a doosey the other night also. I thought it was a shallow dip filled with water. Felt like a freakin' mine shaft going over it though.
Checked my rims and luckily no damage, but im stock. regardless, RTA need a swift kick up their ass - I'm tired of seeing them do half-assed jobs of filling the holes with grit and stones after 6 months of it being there. Then within the week its back to the same way it was.
