Question Extractors - Worth it for just sound?

    Hey guys..

Looking at getting a set of extractors for my VX V6... Now I'm not to phased about chasing power (Obviously still a benefit though)... But is it worth fitting extractors and possibly a hiflow cat just to change the sound/volume of the exhaust?? Will it change it for the better??

My current catback system is 2.5" piping into a middle hotdog muffler to straight rear pipe.

Not really phased about brandnames... But is there any I should stay away from? And how much does a hiflow cat come into play when we are talking about exhaust sound??

    Cheers.

It will make it louder but not necessarily better. It's hard getting a good note out of the Holden 6's.

mate on the VT/VX V6's the standard cat flows just fine and extractors do make a difference, they make it a deeper note when the motor is all warmed up. on my VT s-pack i got pacemaker extractors into a standard cat into a 2 and half inch cat back with a single straight through muffler on the back, sounds mint

My pacemakers + exhaust have a nice note to them for a v6. Mind you the exhaust is custom made, 2 1/2 " into hot dog with rear muffler.. Sounds different to all the other 6's, not necessarily louder, just better sounding. It's not quiet though, and not a bit of drone.

mufflers or lack of are usually what make the V6's sound like shit.
extractors on their own tend to be a lot more subtle.

leave the rear resonator on, and it should be ok

Takes more than extractors to make them sound good. Sorry to be the barer of bad news.

Exhaust note is always subjective. Everyone thinks that their V6 sounds best, the people with V8's think V6's sound like shit.

As Reaper said, but probably not what he meant, you need extractors with the right exhaust to make it sound better.

Yes, extractors make it louder, but only if you have a loud exhaust to begin with.

Yes, a high flow cat definitely makes it louder.

A lot of money to spend just for sound though. Extractors do give you better acceleration (not more power), and better fuel economy when cruising.

If you're expecting an idle V8 sound, you're in for a shock. I wouldn't bother, most exhausted V6's I hear are more quiet than a ricer.

lol thats cause most people just take off the rear resonator and all you hear is drone. do it properly and you will have a nice sounding exhaust.

dont use straight pipes use hotdogs..

Yeh im aware that adding extractors isnt going to make it a V8 sound-a-like... Just asking whether or not they would be better than the stock manifolds in regards to sound.. Thanks guys found my answer

All I have on mine is a set of paceys, ballistic 100cfm cat and a rebadged redback muffler. I think it sounds alright till you get above 3k and it's too harsh. Here's it idling. Before you dismiss it for being close I have a few people who can vouch on more then one occasion it's been mistaken for an 8 :P Even by a guy with an 8.

    sounds mean wraith.

OP extractors let the exhaust gases flow better so of coarse your gonna have a better sound and a bit more power added(not much)

tomorrow arvo i will try get a video up of my exhaust and i will show you that people that say you cant get a v6 to sound alright are just biased..

get the extractors and high flow cat mate.

I have extractors, 200 hi flow cat, 2.5 inch system with centre hotdog and dump at back wheel . Sounds beefy as in idle and even casual driving. Guys with 8's have mistaken mine on idle for a loud V8 and anyone that wishes to hear mine i can upload a video of it or if you live by will happily show you what it sounds like if you are around Brisbane area just to prove it is possible

    - exhaust without the hi flow cat, sounds deeper with the hi flow cat

    1. None of those exhaust sound like v8's..... so stop kidding yourself, the reason a 5L sounds like it does is because of the firing order etc etc.... So a 6 doesn't sound like one.
    2. I cant comment on anyone else's car but mine lost alot of drone but got louder slightly with the extractors, the most noticeable part was between 3-4k the exhaust sounded deeper then the stock exhaust manifolds.
