    Default Question

Okay, So Ive blew up the engine of my 'daily' I currently have no car.. and Im using mums car.. shes not liking the idea..

Im looking at spending $1000 + to fix the car. Now with saying that, I think I could spend about the same and get my Kingswood running. As much I want the kingswood running.. but when it was last running it was really Thirsty.. Last time my mum can remember it used a fuel tank to travel 200k's and it was out of fuel pretty much. (cant be to sure how correct this is.. could of said empty on gauge) from what I know.. It has a 63litre tank? That's almost 31.5Litres per 100k! now thats double of what my commodore uses. I use alot of petrol in the commodore... so IF I was to get the kingswood back on the road.. will I be expected to see a fuel guzzling machine if I took it down to a carby tuner and get my carby tuned properly?
Id be happy with around 18Litres per 100k but 31 is too much..

So would it be possible to get a fuel efficient 253 v8 with a good tune? - Dont say.. oh you'll never get fuel economy with a old v8.. but is it possible to get atleast 20L per 100k from it?

    Thanks..

I've got a 253 3sp auto and 3.08 diff, combined I'm getting an average of 20l/100km, I've got it as low as 18 and it hasn't gone past 22 only difference is mines quite tight, Holley carb that I tuned, and a rooted exhaust, so I could see less. But also my speedo shows 7% less than I'm traveling, so its better again.

$1000 to spend on fixing a commodore isn't really worthwhile when you can pick up another commodore for under a grand if you really look for them.
If your 253 is worn, then you can't expect much from it. If it's a really tight engine and well tuned then yes you can get pretty close to your 18L/100 klm.
My VH SS get's around 21L/100 klm and is bored 40 thou decked 30 thou with flattops and a mild cam.
My VQ stato reads it's avg as 31.9L/100klm and that's unfortunatly including a couple of decent trips recently (not happy with it TBH) and that's a tight engine but stock tune.

Ive already spent it.. + 2000 more. aha. pos car.
So 18l/100k seems to be a average for the old 253's?

I think average for a stockie is about 20-25l/100km as and auto with 3.08 gears, the maul I think should get less, I got down to 18 driving easy on long stretches with the occasional squirt and overtake. It's best economy is about 80-90kph.
I've got a leaky 350 Holley. I'll eventually upgrade to 4brl inlet with Rochester and tune that, should give a bit more power.

Also, being my speedo is out 7%, it should be about 17l/100. Possibly less I'd like to think. Sedans, statos coupes and wagons had 74 litre tank, while the utes, vans and robbers had 84
