    Default Engine rebuild

Okay Ive been quoted $1900 to have a second hand engine fitted into my car..
I recently blew my engine by Im guessing over revving it.. now.. would it be better getting it rebuilt or just getting a second hand motor fitted? Im no mechanic so im not touching anything..

second hand.. the cheaper option would be second hand but the reliable option would be rebuilt.

it all depends on what the engine has been through and the k's etc etc. its like a lucky dip but sometimes without the luck lol

Yeah, when I was speaking to the guy he said.. that the secondhand motor could be from a car driven to church or back.. or one thats been thrashed..

Whoever gave you the 1900 quote is ripping you off. A secondhand buick engine is only worth a few hundred, just need to look around for something decent.
You can find a running engine in a wreck and hear it running etc before you buy it.

    For example, theres one on ebay with the transmission with the starting bid of $300 and it also states you can inspect and hear running;
Holden Commodore VN VG VP Buick V6 Motor Engine & Auto. | eBay

A decent mechanic that wont rip you off will charge about $250 to take old engine out and $250 to drop replacement engine in.. so it should only set you back $800-900.
Having said that, depending on how much you wanna spend, a rebuild alwaysss eases the mind!

go to repco or whatever parts store near you and ask for a price on a reco engien exchange then go to another mechanic (maybe a couple) ask them to quote exchange engine fitted.

Reco exchange option will run about $2700 from memory

I recently changed over my motor. My mechanic found one that had excellent compression. Started it up and sounded great. 140,000k's on the clock.

So he took it with him and threw it in my car. Everything seemed great.

I've now developed piston slap. Its passed the 1 month warranty period so im stuck with piston slap on cold startup for about 15 minutes. Ive added thicker oil and some LiquiMoly MOS2 additive. Still slaps away. Maybe it had it when he first checked the motor out but it mightve been warm when he first got to it, so he might not have notice the slap.

Your mechanic is %100 right. He cannot tell you whether a motor he finds at a wreckers will have been thrashed or not.

I paid $2000 all up including new radiator, rear main seal, water pump, gaskets, hoses, welsh plugs etc so your quote of $1900 is a rip.

Why don't you just do it yourself? In and out with a wrecker engine, you'd be done in a day and save yourself 1500 bucks.
It's really not that hard, everything goes back where it came from.

Unplug the engine loom, drop the engine pipes, dump the radiator, remove said radiator ( disconnect the auto fluid hoses first!), undo the engine mounts, and out she comes.
Keep the gearbox on the motor hen you pull it out and swap it over on the ground where you can easily get to everything.
The hardest part of the whole lot will probably be trying to connect the speedo/reverse sensor back up to the trans when your done.

After a while you'll get better at it. I could probably do it three parts pissed and blindfolded in under 3 hours nowdays. lol.

He wouldn't have. Someone else would have. Perhaps the motor was started before he got there or something...

Well if yours costed $2000 how is my quote a rip? He did mention he'll replace hoses and what not to suit.. Ill call around and see what other mechanics can do for me..
Neet_wagon, trust me.. Ill make something simple cost more then it should I made a simple fuel pump replacement into a $800 bill

Im not denying that i got ripped. Prior to the changeover I turned an oil leak into an $800 bill with the old motor. The last mechanic forgot to plug the fan in. Cooked the motor. They denied that the overheat would be the cause of bottom end knock.

    Get a changeover motor.

    Has piston slap.

    Never fu.cking ends.

So yeah, i aint denyin' that ive ever been ripped cos right now i get ripped with anything i touch.

yeah thats what happens when you get second hand... sometime people are lucky and get a beautiful motor which lasts years and years. sometimes theres people like yourself who keep getting duds. thats how it works unfortunetely

i would personally save up and rebuild it.. therefore you know it will last for ages and the money is well spent

I sold a VR Calais 3.8 engine with 160,000 on ebay for a whopping $2.55c. Damn "No Reserve"

I'd go the rebuild or a change over recond unit from say Repco or Bursons, you then have a warranty and peace of mind, and should last you for many years.
