This happens to me all the time I'd be interested to see if it happens to you.
I bought my VR Berlina Wagon for $1700 12 months ago over the past year if I've suggested I'd like to modify or change something on my car I get told by hubby but mainly his dad "it's not worth it". When I wanted to put my stereo system in the car I got told "Stereo's worth more then your car it's not worth it" Every single thing I want to do that seems to be the stock standard reply. Where as to me I love my car and I don't care what I paid in money for the car, I don't intend to sell it so to 'me' it's worth it. I just ignore the pair of them safe in the knowledge I'm going to do what I want anyway
So my question to you guys is this. Have you ever had someone tell you you're car wasn't worth it? If so Why and what did you do/say?

Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
That's the other side of the coin for me too Walesy. When I looked at my wagon I got told to leave it where it was. I looked at it and seen potential, they looked at it and seen faded paint. In the 12 months I've owned it, it has never let me down & my father in law has had to eat his words when he's said "bloody reliable car wish I had of bought it" but he thinks for $1700 it's only worth running into the ground. She still drives like a brand new car so why not make her look like one![]()

My wife has come to the conclusion that I have cars in my blood and love to tinker, she now says go for it (spending my own "pocket" money only) but encourages me on my hobby. Tell them to get stuffed and do what ya wanna do, that's what you earn money for. I think most blokes on this forum would love to have a partner that is at least interested in cars.

Oh no the fact that I love tinkering on my car drives them nuts. I clean my car every weekend meticulously, am super strict on the kids in the car (no kicking doors, seats etc) And every weekend without fail I cop it for being too "fussy" Hubby bought a VT on Friday and didn't seem to mind me bringing out the cotton tips and toothbrushes and being fussy when I was cleaning it. But his dad made sure to have his digs about it.
My father raised me to respect cars & told me that I loved helping him work on cars when I was as young as 4 so it's something that 30 years later I'm still passionate about but at times need either their advise or their muscle which makes it a lot harder to get done what I want done. Until I start threatening to pay someone to do it then I get helped, begrudgingly.

You never get the money back, but that doesn't mean its not worth it. Ive spent cash on performance upgrades on my stato (engine, diff, suspension etc) and I know that moneys dead but it doesnt bother me. The fact is I drive it every day, ive done 80k in 3 years in the car and I will own it for at least another 2 years. The way I see it im getting thousands of hours of enjoyment out of the few grand that ive spent on mods, so when resale time comes I dont care if i dont get the money back. It was done for fun, not for an investment
the amount of money ive spent on my SS i could have just about bought a VE SS, doesnt mean i want one though lol.
When I bought my new VS home on the back of a truck in an almost written off condition with my plans for a restoration/sleeper my dad laughed at me (he is a VE man and doesn't appreciate the oldies)
Now the VS is almost finished he loves it and reminds him of his old VS Senator which he absolutely adored :P
I spend $15k restoring a 89 Subaru Sportswagon a few years back (the last of the proper dual range 4WD subies, they must be preserved :P) which most told me I was mad for doing but once they have taken it for a spin they all come back with a big grin on their face![]()
Car's are never worth spending money on. But hey if it makes your experience more enjoyable while you have it why not.
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like
Yes, but you also get to save a bit when you learn how to fix stuff and even just simple servicing. I would hate to think how much I have saved over the last 10 years just by having a go.
What I really need is a brain vacuum cleaner to absorb all the skills some of the people have on this site lol.

As hard as it is for me to say it, money spent on a car is lost money. It can be an expensive hobby and have a snowball effect once you start modding and you'll rarely ever get the money you put into it back.
In saying that, I have a project car that I'm restoring. Now that I look back at the cars i've had and what i've spent on them I wish i'd bought a project car sooner. It stays in the garage most off the time and has had no engine in it for 18months but it doesn't bother me because the wife and I have a luxury car for long drives and a car for daily/shopping tasks.
My advice would be keep the car as it is and run it in the ground or buy yourself a daily and start fixing the VR Berlina Wagon

Oh fark yes! All the frik'n time! More so on my 4x4 then anything... 40k later I can still only sell it for about 6k tops.. But Its a one off truck and it goes places a new 80k truck cant!
Even with my ute, which looks great and goes fairly average.. I have one mate in particular that tells m the paint is shi7, the mags are shi7, it sounds like shi7 blah blah blah, so I turn around and remind him that he spent 70k on building an AU FALCON Ute and hes about to swap it for a Stock AU Wagon + give a $1000 to the new owner of the ute!
####!
DO as you please with you car within reason.. Dont rush out and waste 4grand doing something silly to your car if you can get on standard, ie: Manual conversion
The reverse to this issue is..is it worth spending $40 - $50k + on a new car only to see it depreciate at $3 - $5k + pa while incurring interest at 8% - 10% pa if you haven't got the luxury of a big bag of cash lying around (and even then some one will always say there is a better use for a big bag of cash than spending it on a car). That could be $10k+ pa gone anyway.
Ultimately all cars, whether new or old, cost money. The very few, rarer sought after examples are the only ones that "may" make a gain over time.
At the end of the day, the owner is the one that has to pay for & live with what ever option they choose. What price enjoyment ?
How boring would life be if everyone had the "it's not worth it" approach.
Thats exactly right. Even for a basic service Oil+filer=$60. My brothers missus takes her nice sensible '04 corrola in for a service at a dealer and rarely spends under $400. If something breaks, i do a bit of research and fix it myself. Saves money, you learn things, and get to know your car better.
In some cases it is really not worth it but this applies to cars that are very common and cheap to buy that are damaged or rusted badly or mechanically damaged to the point you could pick up a near immaculate example for the same price or less to fix it Ive have seen many people fight a loosing battle with these cars because they have a sentimental attachement to it
But if your car isnt one of these its up to you what you want to do with it and it there will be always people telling you its not worth it ,I have copped this from people because its a statesman aswell because it not a v8 & On sunday I copped shit from car show workers because I was showing it thinking it was stock they soon shut up when I popped the bonnet and it got a lot pictures taken of it all day
I find it's really only people who don't understand the emotional connection I have with my VR that make comments like that. While my Parents wouldn't spend money on it like I have, they understand that my car means a lot to me, and are impressed with how it's progressing.
My car is kinda like therapy, a reward for hard work, modifying it gives me something to look forward to, I enjoy everything about it and it's rewarding to sit back and look at the epic shine you've created over a weekends work, for example as a short term acheivement, or to look at the car as a whole and how far it's come since you first got it. It's something you can rely on, too. It won't cheat on you or break your heart. I found it comforting, and I get lost in it sometimes; if I have a bad day, I can go and work on it, or clean it and focus in depth and I forget all the other shit that sucks for a while, so I guess it's an escape too.
If anyone hasn't seen the film 'Love the Beast' then you should, it explains this connection we have to our cars. It's good to get your family to watch too, as it can help them understand this stuff, and it's just an awesome film. I discovered the band 'Explosions in the Sky' from this movie too, awesome driving music.
^^^^ +1
unfortunately ownig a vy s people are always telling me nothing is worth it... still got 19's going on it soon and lowering it and that's after the $1700 spent on the exhaust lol
i know $1700 is over the top for an exhaust but it sounds good for a v6 and goes a whole lot better for it too... no one is convinced that wacking a turbo or a blower on it is a better idea that buying a v8 even if i have more power but then i have something that i like so i dont really care what people say lol
Wow, after reading this I decided to to a quick calculation in my head of what I've spent on my Statesman... and it's near 10K and most people would look at it and wonder where the money has gone. I'll never get that money back but the car is the way I like it, so to me it's worth every cent.
Now if only someone could loan me 15K for a forced induction kit.. hmmm.....
Dont worry about what people say, everyone needs a hobby (it makes life a little less seriousand enjoyable).... Hence why we all spend so much money on cars.... Mine is a bloody money pit and it looks like a bucket, but it has memories so its worth every cent
But it will get put in the garage when I buy a newer and quicker car, I'm thinking of respraying it and bringing everything back to 100% stock/grandpa spec but i'll see how i feel![]()
I Get it all the time, but my VT S pack is a manual and only owes me 10k (4500 for car and about 5-6k in mods). i dont think ill be losing much money as they are getting rarer by the day. Although its not running atm which is a let down...
if you cant find it, grind it
