so for my p's i am looking to spend up to 3000 on a vr/vs/vt
i need some options like what has the best fuel economy, power looks tough dumped the usual p plater stuff,
also is there a big diffrence between wagons and sedans?
so far i have been offered: a blue vt with 12 months rego for 3500
and a vs acclaim with 8 months rego for 1200
dont forget the price of insurance (if going full comp)
dont buy a car till youve seen it, tested it and so forth.
but id say the vs, its a good start and pretty easy to get spare parts for it. (is obviously biased)
but like i said try both, check their status on vicroads and so forth
should have stated i live in nsw,
thanks for your response i know both of the owners of the cars, the vt is stock as a rock and the vs is average
is there anything i should look for? when buying a used car? i know the basics check oil, milky oil, oil in coolant etc etc
but anything small?
any whines from the engine/diff etc
check if the gears change easily if its in an auto.
any paint/panel damage or wear
rattles from the inside, not a big deal but they do get annoying
see if all the buttons work, all lights work.
oh and the bigest thing
NEVER BUY A CAR WITHOUT A ROADWORTHY CERT
it can cause you to be out of pocket alot of when you take it to get a rwc things are wrong
just basic things really, things you wouldnt except a car to do
For only 3 grand I reckon you'd be better off buying a decent VS over a crappy VT. Chances are for 3k, a VT will be in need of some TLC - however you'd be better off with a newer car, a 4-5k VT (series 2) would be the way to go.
Don't bother with VRs man![]()
nathans VY Calais - 'Calais 2.0' | VT Equipe | VS Calais **SOLD!**
I would always suggest going for the latest model in reasonable condition that you can afford. Don't forget that with each new model, the cars are generally improved over the models they replaced. They have better safety, handling, braking, stronger bodies, better seats, higher equipment levels. I've owned a VR and the VS was really little different. They are both really old cars now and are pretty crude. The interiors were crap. They were never as solid or well engineered as the VT onwards. However, early VT's had their share of faults and are also getting on in years now. You should be able to buy a decent VT Series 2 for your budget if you look around - even early VX's are getting down around your price.
The thing is, there are thousands of cars out there, so take your time looking and be extremely careful if you are considering buying from a private seller. You will drive off without any sort of guarantee or warranty protection if the car turns out to be a dog.
VTs have dropped heaps in value! If you try and trade one in you can expect maybe $1500 back.. If you're close to Sydney it might be good to go there for a weekend and have a look as they are common and cheap there! When I was looking I found them in decent condition for 2500 - 3000 from dealers with rego. Im paying $3600 for mine with 10.5 months rego and has a fair few mods... Don't just buy the first car you find, have a look around see if you can get a better one for a better price!
well this is a 1999 series 2 vt id never pay 3500 for it as i had a decent look over it and it needs a few very minor things done to it, maybe 2700-3000 it does have 12 months rego
im going to keep looking for both vs and a vt![]()
dont be afraid to make offers, ive found in my experiences people are easily swayed by cash in their faces
yeah they do lol, and if they dont that fail at selling cars
there is no harm in offering cash, worst they can say is no
MAte lete me tell u this first. IF YOU "DUMP" your commodore like a fully sick muzztek does i will buy a plane ticket to where ever u live, i will find you, and stick my foot up ur ass to set you straight......so please just lower it all the way around with maximum SSL springs and NOT JUST THE REAR
And now that we got this ove and done with i would go for the VT they are nice cars cheap and have good performance and potencial and also sound beautiful with a 2.1/2 inch exhaust
Ecotecs sound great.... until you hear an ls1.

na.... a 6L bored and stroked to 7L with a massive cam, is much better then an ls1 or 5L
i know the guy who has it in his car too, and it used to be a supercharged 5.7, as his daily!
back to topic. just remember as a p plater you will be representing us all, so if you muck up youll make us all look bad.
you will be targetted like a raptor (or whatever) will target a field mouse.
and for low amounts offer the person cash, it works better for buyer and seller when it comes to the hand over .
but seriously if they wont get a roadworthy for you walk away, they probably know something is wrong.
I think VX are the bargain buy of the commodore range at the moment. Failing that a good VS might be the go since they are lighter and faster in a straight line than a VT. Make sure you get ABS and airbags. Don't mean to be negative, but myself and half of my mates all had prangs within 3 yrs of getting our licenses and the stats on this issues don't lie.
I'd definitely pay attention to the transmission. Most people are morons and don't service the transmission EVER and the result is they only last 200k or so. If the fluid looks brown or Brownish/red, or the gear changes dont feel sharp I would steer well clear
yeah, well atleast it is in a holden =P and you can get stock 7L's (w427 Ls7?)
when you go to look at a car dont look very excited, otherwise people think they can win you over.
write a list of what is wrong with the car, what you may need to fix, any other problems it has. see how much it will cost to fix, whether it is worth trying to fix them
and use this to lower the price if you want. or use it to compare against other cars.
everything is wrong with "slamming" commodores first of all it #### up the look, makes me and every normal person sick to the stomach, and it looks ###ing ugl and makes me wanna kill every body in the world. that how disgusting it is, its a ####en distgrace. and shut up i like the note of the ecotec
