Hey guys,
So I've got a chance (as the title probably gives away) to get an old VS Commodore S as my first car. I'm pretty keen given that I've always wanted one and shit, but I have a few questions. I can afford to pay cash for the car (which is a big deal cause I don't want to get a loan and my old man won't lend me much if anything) but I'm not sure about the other costs, and figured this wouldn't be a bad place to ask.
- How much can I expect to pay for my green slip? Background info: I live in NSW, 19 (almost 20), on my P-90s but gonna get my p-100s soon, never had an accident or made an insurance claim, one incident on my record where I drove into a No Entry street and some copper pulled me over - cause it was Queens Birthday weekend I got 2 demerit points. Other than that, my driving record's clean. (I'm also ethnic, and I've heard stories that they love to slap extra charges on us although I can't verify them). I know I won't get an exact answer here, but I'm looking for kind of the area I can expect to pay.
- I'm aware of rego transfer and stamp duties - how much, on average, are these and are there any other hidden costs I should be aware of?
Thanks in advance.
- How much does
does it come with a rwc or do you need to get it? How much work does it need?
I need to get the RWC, and I'll be getting a mate who knows more about that sorta thing than I do to have a look at it first. If it needs a lot of work, I'm not going there.
think hear in vic its 8 bucks for every 200 for 1 of the charges.. Have a look and see what it needs then work out the price with the seller and see if you can talk out a deal..
Ok, So the extra Costs.
In NSW your Stamp Duty will be 3% Of what ever you pay for the car.
Example. 2 Grand, Your Stamp Duty will be $60
NRMA Charge about $512 For your CTP Green Slip for really anyone under 25, This ONLY covers you for Injury to the other driver.
For 3rd Party Property (if you damage some else's car etc) About $350-400, But piece of Mind if you hit a Ferrari etc.
Rego will be about $312 a year.
Rego Transfer Fee from Previous Owner $28
Road Worthy Check (WRC) About $48 and if nothing is wrong with the car, If something is wrong, You will need to pay for the repair, Then have another WRC.
If i were you mate, id push for him to get the rwc, or you could be in for a big shock. Also if he won't then starting picking out everything on the car you can to try lower the price
The VK was my uncle's car and what I learnt to drive in. I say it's my current ride because it's better than admitting I drive my dad's Suzuki Alto.
I almost bought one for myself, but the bastard was totally rusted.
Well just make sure the VS isnt too old make sure its in good nick. you dont want something thats beens thrashed around and needs to be fixed all the time. Rego and petrol will knock you back a bit and plus any mods you wish to make to the car such as a stereo, exhaust, mags and anythin else is in your budget. Dont blow all your cash on buying the car you'll probably need a third of your money just looking after it. Might sound mean but try to buy one from old folks coz they dont drive that much and keep the car in decent shape.

I Don't Care What You Say, But My Commy Is The Fastest Car In The World
ah roger boss. Yeah have a good look over the vs mate, if you aren't that mechanically minded, maybe get your dad or a friend who is mechanically minded to have a look at it. Pretty easy to spot oil leaks, belts (if they need replacing), make sure coolant and oil are full also. Check tyres make sure they are all ok. I know its been mentioned earlier, but see if the seller can get a rwc for you also.
