Hey Guys
Was pulled up by cops in my VY Clubby who thought my exhaust was too loud. He reported me to the DECC who sent me a letter saying i needed to get an anti tampering test done and noise tested.
Got tested at 98 db but the mechanic also defected me for MAFless tune, Aftermarket Cam and rough idle.
Changed exhaust to stock standard from pacemaker extractors back to tip and thought id be fine as sounded heaps quiter. Fitted standard air box.
took back for a 2nd test and is still over by 2db and still wont pass the rough idle.
Car is now defected and cant be driven till all put back to standard which means removing cam, headers and getting retuned all back to stock which sound stupid when I should be spending money to make it faster not slower plus dont have the cash.
Anyway, I need to know if I cancel the rego and change it into another name will the RTA allow to do this. or cancel the rego for 3 months and get a blue slip?
Has anyone sold or rechanged the plates and name of rego to get around this?
This is why its not worth doing heaps of engine work to modern cars. You spend thousands just to have some clown say you have to remove it all.Stuff that.
do you know anyone that tried this?

so WHY was it defected for each thing????
mafless tune = emissions (only logical thing/ unless no air filter or loud induction nose (unlikely over your exhaust)).........
cam is not a fail UNLESS idle is too low and the cam surges the car in first (or stalls)........
rough idle is obvious as it surges car forward in lopw gear no accelerator..............
so IN QLD MY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE:
so raise the idle to 1500 rpm (no more lumpy)maybe 1200???? (memory of mine is shithouse)
fit DOUBLE cats (length) (meet emissions for mafless tune) as mafless tune is legal IF emissions under pre-requisite for your state laws...
and then get it retested
if better cats still fail EMISSIONS TEST then get a better tuner.....
if ONLY A NOISE FAILURE then simply have a HOTDOG muffler added/fitted OR a better rear muffler (not straight through one e.g. a feedback (old style talk to exhaust shop here))
its a game with new cars now, to meet the laws is simple, just need to remember as you make it faster make it just as safe and enviromentally friendly,
the reason for which i dont like ve v6 tunes right now is your exact problem source poor tuning.....just an opinion but anyway.....
all of this depends on which state you were defected in (or went for a roadworthy/safety certificate in)
as rules change from state to state and as such so do decibel readings etc etc
check your states website for information QLD = Home (Department of Transport and Main Roads)
and search modifications or click on SAFETY on top part then use links left hand side to light vehicles standards
as for other states not sure nsw has an online system i think....
and yes its 3 years IF defect is POLICE or TRANSPORT department ISSUED
Wtf since when can u get defected for rough idle and since when can mechanics defect?

Since the greeny's got in government and invented the so called "department of Climate change and enviroment" in NSW. Basically they dont like people with modified cars and loud exhausts.
I thought it was stupid when he told me id need to remove the camshaft. Have had many cars over the years that have been way more modified and have never been defected for a cam or how it idles.
These mechanics have been chosen by the EPA to look for defects once the cops send you there for just the exhaust noise. plus he is the only one allowed to clear them. The mechanic near me is pretty tough. wouldnt let me off for even 2db over even though it has a stock exhaust on it.
might be worth finding another mechanic then if it can save you the hassleThe mechanic near me is pretty tough. wouldnt let me off for even 2db over even though it has a stock exhaust on it.
thats the problem dude, I cant take it to another mechanic, he is the only one. once you go there you cant go anywhere else as he keeps your paperwork. plus the nearest other mechanic would be 500km away. just thinking about cancelling the rego and put in storage for a while
that sucks man... but yeah i wouldnt be undoing all the work you've done just too pass regothats the problem dude, I cant take it to another mechanic, he is the only one. once you go there you cant go anywhere else as he keeps your paperwork. plus the nearest other mechanic would be 500km away. just thinking about cancelling the rego and put in storage for a while
maybe register it in another state somehow and then transfer it back??
yeah that was one thing i was wondering about... although someone did suggest extra catscorrect me if im wrong... but they will put the sniffer in his exhaust... where is the loophole for that?
cam+tune will mean he will fail the sniff for sure.
i dont need to get the sniffer test done, just have 2 somehow stop the "rough Idle" and reduce the noise by 2db. As im not from the city they dont make us go and get the epa emissions test. so cam and tune is fine as long as i can make it sound like it idling "stock".
I would speak to your tuner about getting the tune modified to try and remove the rough idle... Have heard this can be adjusted in a tune (to an extent), as for reducing the sound by 2db surely you can go to an exhaust shop and they may have an old muffler lying around they can weld in for you?
a decent tuner should be able to tune most cams to run like a stocker
stick a varex on it, then you can be quiet and loud.

In nz you can register as a 'race car' hold a race authority card and you bypass a large amount of legislation. I think you need a cage though. Could be a similar system over there?
