Ok, I'm currently a bit bored at work and got thinking about some exhaust modifications.
I currently have a twin 3" xforce system in M/Steel on my VZ Clubby.
It's got centre muffler and a rear muffler.
Now, I have 2 goals.
1. Get a more classic sound. More "thumpy".
2. Make it a bit quieter all round.
So, to get the classic sound I was planning to remove the merge point and replace with straight pipes.
To make it quieten my solution was going to be to replace the exhaust.
But then I had an idea, what if instead of replacing the merge with 2 straight pipes, I replace the merge with 2 hotdogs?
So the exhaust will go headers > cats > hotdog > centre muffler > rear muffler (single) on each pipe?
Thought's? Comments? Etc?
I know the topic of replacing mufflers with hots and vice versa has been covered, but this is a bit different I think.

Mate I'm not too sure how you could manage to fit a hotdog between the cat and the centre muffler... be a hell of a squeeze! lol
The task of achieving a more classic lumpy noise AND make it quieter at the same time seems almost impossible i would think?
The 'classic/thumpy' comes from it being a bit louder i thought? (replacing some muffler with hotdogs and straight pipes :P haha)
Very interesting concept *sits and waits for NAAB* haha
Yeah, should be just enough space to fit some 12" ?
Looking at the distances in this picture:
Nah, the classic sound I'm chasing seems to be achieved with either straight pipes or straight pipes with a balance.
Putting just straight pipes on would make the system overall a few db louder... so yeah. Interested to hear peoples opinion.
not sure if the hotdog would fit that to be honest :/ if it did it'd run straight into the centre muffler too, sounds like a very restricting exhaust too with all that on! (i assume lol)
EDIT: OWWWWW yeah if you straighten the starting point instead of letting them run into one another you could fit a hotdog lol, just make it quieter i think and that's all?
yeah well just straight piping the end instead of a resonator should make it sound a bit louder and more lumpy. if you do want to go very loud and very, very lumpy i'd tell you to get the system i got on my 6 haha! :P (yes yes i know 6's suck...)
The first thing you should do is remove the X Force and throw it as far as you can.
To make it sound more old school, get rid of the merge and have two separate pipes from the cats to the mufflers. Fitting hotdogs will make it quieter, separating the two sides for as long as possible is the best way to achieve the old school thump. I have done that on the Senator, but it has one pipe out behind each wheel too, so it is even more distinct.
Fitting 4-1's with high flow cats will also make it more of a thumpy note after the merge has been removed.

Cheers, NAAF.
Agree on the first comment, but I want to see what can be acheived with the xforce... a challenge if you will.
Yeah, going to a exhaust place this satruday to run them through my idea. If i got dogs before the centre mufflers, the system will be seperated all the way untill the rear muffler.
Fingers crossed
I have a twin 3" xforce on my VT and I replaced the rear muffler with a much larger unit, and it made a huge difference to the way it sounds.
Not a great picture, but it is almost double the length of the old muffler and it is round.
It isnt pretty, but it does the job.
2 pipes. one for either side, out either side at the back, no crossing at all.
sounds the best in my opinion =P
but yeah whatever you go with, i cant wait to hear it
Just got back from an exhaust place... put the car on the hoist and had a look.
The bloke said they can put 2 dogs on for me if I want, but it will have sweet all difference and having no merge will make it louder.
Also discovered that the headers and cats are both 2.5" and then then catback is twin".
Thus pointless and thus why I might just buy a decent 2.5" instead.
