Just a rant to let off some steam.
Went into a place today to get my power steering rack replaced & out of curiosity also got a quote on lowering the VN about 30mm, as it looks rather tall with 15" wheels & standard springs. I won't name the place as I don't know this sites policy on naming businesses but I will say that Neil Crompton features prominantly in thier TV commercials.
Quote to lower VN Series I Sedan 30-40mm, (just springs, no shocks): $645.
Quote to lower same car including that particular company's shocks: $1680.
The first quote I pretty much expected, the second quote I felt like slapping the bloke just to make sure he wasn't dreaming. An extra grand to put in a set of shocks, I couldn't believe it. He'd already have all that apart. How on earth can they justify an extra $1000 to fit a set of thier own brand shocks, which are probably just another brand relabelled?
The day I'll pay that much to lower my car is the day I lose my marbles & buy a F... Fo... For.... I can't type it!!
The GSL RallySport package is looking very appealing.

Dunno about the older models but my ve was around that much by the time i did the struts and springs.
That's not replacing the struts themselves. That's just the 4 springs, 4 shocks & the panhard. Hell, that didn't even include a wheel alignment.

yeah dude just do it all yourself... shouldnt take more than a couple of hours and is a great way to save some money
all you need is a jack, some jack stands and a socket set or spanner set
Shock and strut + springs kit (king spring) off ebay for $570 or so, or even like you say KYB shocks and stuff of our site sponsor.
It would actually be easier to change the front struts rather than using the older ones, and less labour.. Don't know how they justify that.
Rear shocks take 10 minutes to change, springs take 15mins or so, fronts about an hour (without trying to shoot off the strut top).
Try find a friend who can give ya pointers or help you out, so much cheaper.
springs (Kings), shocks (KYB), strut tops (Boge, with bearings) installed and aligned cost me $1k for my VY.
Id check out genuine holden FE2 springs and front struts. It works out fairly cheap, especially if you fit them yourself.I just bought 2 new genuine FE2 springs for my VS,and they were around $50 each from my local holden dealer. The rear springs are a similar price. FE2 is holdens version of sports suspension. The FE2 springs are about 25 - 30 mm lower than the standard springs, and are a bit stiffer as well.I paid around $100 each for new genuine FE2 struts too.
I don't really have the spare time to do the job myself which is why I started ringing around for quotes but after a quote like that I'm going to find the time & save myself $1000. I can always bribe a mate of mine that works in the industry with a bottle of JD to come give me a hand & cut the time down.
I havn't made up my mind between a Kings & Monroe set, GSL RallySport package or the FE2 yet. All three options are within $150 of each other so I'll have to work out what I think will perform best for me. I'm taking my mates VP for a drive today that has the FE2 in it to see what I think of that so I'll probably make up my mind after that & order what I want. Then the stuff can sit in the garage for the next 3 months while I try to find the time to fit it up.
