    Question Dyeing Upholstery

I hate the tanish coloured pillars, roof lining and parcel shelf in my vx. Wasnt sure about getting it reupholstered, assumed it would cost a fair bit. But desperatly want them black as thats the overall interior theme im going for.

was wondering if anyone has tryed dyeing them, specifically the roof lining and parcel shelf with something like VHT vinyl dye or a cheaper alternative with good/great results?

    Thoughts/opinions?

(sorry if this is the wrong section)

I coloured the white hoodlining inside my HT years ago using VHT satin black vinyl dye. It was a total success, but the material used in those days was an embossed vinyl, not the padded and moulded materials they use today. VHT is probably the best brand to play around with.

You could spray the soft materials with the dye but you would probably find it made it stiff and not as comfortable to the touch. The dye is durable and wouldn't rub off, but I couldn't say how it would look. It would work fine on the hard plastics but could be subject to scratching and peeling if you didn't prepare the parts with a thorough cleaning first. You might also have to use a plastic primer. Check the instructions on the VHT dye to see if a primer is needed.

I wouldn't just go ahead and start spraying the hoodlining without experimenting first. Try spraying a section of hoodlining in a car at the wreckers first to see what the finish is like. The dye dries pretty quickly so you wouldn't be waiting around for hours to see the result.

with your roof lining just go a local upholster and pick up about 2m by 1.5m of black fabric and follow this thread HOW TO replace headlining - Very detailed.

and i done all the pillars in my VT myself with some vinyl spray paint. about 25$ a can. i took them out sanded them back with wet/dry sand paper sol they were nice and smooth then cleaned them up a bit with prep wash (wax and grease remover) and did a few coats and finished with a clear coat, that was about 1 year ago and i sold the car last week and they still looked perfect.
