Hi people, went to a mechanic to find out why my climate control and trip computer wasn't working,I knew the exact problem which was just a 15A fuse but the mechanic told me that I needed a new trip computer and a new climate control.I said ok I will get back to you,now how dishonest is that. What rip offs has anyone else had with mechanics or any other trades?
Did you do it just to see whether he'd try rip you off?
abe lincoln once said: "if you look for the bad in people expecting to find it, you surely will"
godn damn mechanics, trying to pay rent and feed their families.
he was being dishonest?
how about you going to a mechanic even though its just a fuse to catch him out? and was it just a fuse, or was the mechanic right?
seriously this forum confuses me.
But why did the fuse blow in the first place??
Yes I did do it to see if he would rip me off,my usual mechanic that I go to for things that I cant do recently retired so I want to find another mechanic and this one definately wont get my business.
Yes it was only the fuse
dont take this the wrong way, but you need to get laid. or something.
Your saying that I was dishonest for trying to see if he was dishonest,so what then just go and let anyone rip you off and be ok with it I dont think so
Fuses don't just blow they blow for a reason what was the reason?
ive got better things to do then go around and plant traps to see if mechanics are worthy of servicing my car
Are you saying dont take it the wrong way when I get laid
Interestingthat you went to a mechanic for an electrical fault. I would have thought it would have been more relevant to take the car to an auto electrician.
If you really wanted to find out if the guy's honest, there were much better (and fairer) ways of doing it. (Like asking your former mechanic for a recommendation for example)
Dont know why it went but it split down the middle
this is the best question so far.
and you will probably find that the mechanic he took it to has had expierence with these things before, and his 'best guess' was that the trip computer was fragged and would keep flipping fuses. without actually having a look he wouldnt know for sure.
nothing peeves me more than people automatically assuming their mechanic is ripping them off.
There's a big difference in price and honesty so you need to find someone that will give you both
Fuses don't just blow...

True, but sometimes it takes very little to make them blow. That's why they are rated much lower than the circuit they protect. It doesn't always require a faulty circuit or component - just a minor spike in current such as accidentally touching something with a screwdriver or a loosely fitting globe can blow fuses.
ari666 he had a good look at everything and came to this decision, checked the fuses and did not even mention to me that the fuse was blown when I knew that it did as I left it that way so if I'm pissing you off because I'm letting you know that I'm being ripped off then thats your problem and you need to chill mate
I can kinda see the point he is making, for example if something more serious was to happen to his car, could he trust that the mechanic wasnt ripping him off and replacing things that didnt need replacing. Weather it was fair or not is another thing i guess.
Shouldn't the mechanic of been honest in the first place so he could then gain my business or doesn't he need extra work
He's a mechanic not an auto leccy what do you expect him to do /thread

The bottom line is that I'm trying to find a decent mechanic who wont rip me off the last mechanic I had for 16 years and he was honest
So your saying that a mechanic doesn't know when a fuse has blown
