    Default n.s.w's rego question

hey i was wondering if say you had a car with 8 months rego and you blew the engine or something, could you cancel the rego until the car gets fixed, because theres no point letting the cars rego slowly run out if you cant even use it, I looked on the rta site but they didnt have an exact anwser from what i could find, also if you buy a new car that doesnt have rego can you swap rego from another car to that car? so say you have a car with 6 months rego that your going to send to the scrap yard and you buy a new car that just ran out of rego can you put the 6 months onto the new car (after it passes a pink slip) any help would be great

you can, but then you will have to get a blue slip to get it re regod, you just take the plates into the rta and fill out the paperwork to cancel the rego, about swapping the rego im not sure, they might refund you then you have to pay the rego for the other car
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!

I tried this when i had two 1992 CC Lancers.
One had 8 months rego on it and rough paintwork but impeccable running gear.
The other was unregistered, perfect body/paint and interior but rooted running gear.
My intention was to put the good running gear into the good bodied car.
Went into RTA and asked if i could do a blue slip on the unregistered car and then transfer the 8 months across to it.
    RTA said No.
I then questioned why can you do it when you buy a new or used car from a car yard and have your plates shifted to the new car with the remaining rego.
Was told car yards can do it, general public can't.
Car yards can also do 3 or 6 months rego from a blue slip also. General public can't.
Only way around it is to have a mate who runs or works high up enough in a car yard to take ownership of both cars and do the transfer and then resell it back to you on paper.
I can do it via my father in law but he'll only do it for my own perso cars not for anyone else.
Only way you can transfer your plates yourself from one car to the other is to have your plates put on hold, cancel your rego (you'll lose the stamp duty) and then put fresh rego on the newly slipped car and get your old plates back out of "on hold"
unless your plates are personalised, not worth the bother trying to retain them this way.
I am tired so i'm not sure if i've outlined this good enough, but i'll re-edit or answer q's tomorrow after i've had some sleep... been a very long day...

yeah with the changeing rego from one car to another, you would think if you buy a un-regoed roadworthy car that can pass a pink or blue slip, that you would be able to swap the rego from another car to that car, but yeah it seems like a long process to sell then buy back on paper from a dealership type place, plus you would probly have to know them pretty well for them to go along with it, in the end its probly not worth it

it's the rta mate, nothing is easy or straight forward. i've had difficulties doing odd transactions for the father in law at the trade counter at times cause the attendant isn't quite sure what is and isn't permissible at times...
no wonder my missus' father has gone baldish after 28 years of running a car yard... some of my quirky deals probably haven't helped him much either!!!

you can put 6 month rego on it as general public, my sisters been doing it to her daewoo for the past 18 months.

also you can cancel it, they just issue you a "refund" on the unused time, although dont expect that to be much. I put 12 month rego on my bike, then 3 months later had an accident so I cancelled the rego with 9 months remaining, my refund was a whopping $14. Had it been $20 or more they could have left it "in credit" and taken it off the cars rego this year, but because it was under 20 bucks they had to issue it as a cheque.

similar reason why i'm looking for a qld address so next time i upgrade my truck license class i can save heaps of $$$$$.
In NSW if i wanna upgrade to b double i have to fork out over $3000
In qld, i sit in with another driver after doing my L's for the upgrade. Do 60 hours on my log book and pay the $60 fee and upgrade...... NSW sucks, most heavily taxed state in australia.

yeah one of my friends just moved to qld and she had to do something with her license, so she did it online, it took her 15 minutes and cost $17, but to do the same thing in nsw's you have to go to the rta with all your i.d's ect, pay $70, then wait around for an hour, anyways enough hateing on the rta thanks for the help everyone

not worth cancelling it really... if you cancel it you need a real thorough inspection to get it re registered otherwise all you need to do is notify the rta of the new engine number

    Commonsense tells me "NO"

Because it is not the RTA's problem -- it is your problem.

You have to think about what records appear on your registration papers and the RTA's records. RTA records contain engine and chassis numbers. If you swapped the rego from one car to a similar model, the chassis number won't align with the RTA records, even if you swapped the engine to ensure that it aligned. It's a pain but there are solid reasons for not being able to just swap the rego from one car to another.

yeah but thats sort of what i ment, if you did tell them the new chassis number ect and they fixed it all up, then it would be alright without changing anything over, but apparntly you cant
