Hey guys,
So I went for a cruise around warrigal and the strzelecki ranges this weekend with a few friends and on the trip back on some gravel road my car decided to try and kill me.
I have a VX Commodore V6 2001 Auto and around difficult parts i stayed in 2nd to help with cornering and hills etc but on one corner my car decided to do a little kick out,
no stress has happened before but while that happened it slipped back into first and decided to screw my hold on the turn to fishtail, do a 180 and end up literally millimetres from
the edge of an extra long fall..
This has only ever happened one other time in the wet on a track so i didnt expect it to happen again and now im actually scared of my car..
I have already started looking for something that won't kill me but before i do is there possibly something within budget i can do to help my current car to handle better
considering driving a silvia around those ranges sideways is easy for me..
Would be much appreciated for any advice.
Obviously you were going to fast for the conditions if it kicked out, i have never ever had a car kick out unintentionally unless i was driving too fast for the conditions or being stupid.
Auto are quite simple, go too slow and accelerate in high gear it simply goes down a cog, if you couldn't anticipate that happening its a worry.
You could buy an manual and not have that problem? You could also get a shitkit and shit put in, and get the computer programmed so it only shifts when you tell it to if it's in 1/2/3 not Drive.
Learn to drive to conditions.

drive to the conditions and stop over estimating your skills. the last comment about the silvia tells me you think you have some pretty good skills but the loss of control of your auto vx tells me you dont have as much skill as you think. the fact that you couldnt anticipate the auto dropping down a gear when you obviously booted, is a worry to say the least.
dont drive like a ######## and the car wont want to kill you. simple
some words of wisdom here, take them onboard while you still can
lol.......
Yo.
Take advanced driving lessons. A few hundred dollars spent now will save you thousands or more later.
the road is for driving the track is for racing dont mix the two together .

Maybe you should stick to a front wheel drive car then if you can't handle rear.
I like how its THE CAR tried to kill you...fair enough if a a wheel let go or similar....but sorry my friend this was all down to your obvious lack of driving experiance...
Now dont get me wrong in my 24 years of driving I have had my fair share of ooppsies in my early days of driving but in 99% of the time it was because of me not the car...
Lucky enough I have survived and have grown up along with my attitude to safer driving, which I think only maturity can do....

Don't most P platers think they can drive like ken block in their stock stand commodores with the bob jane tyre and wheel upgrades ??
Guilty as charged lol although i will never admit its the cars fault if i crash my car what am i going to do "AH stupid wheels i blame you?" Lol remove the lead from your right foot it might help
2 speed powerglide...fast and faster
only option would be a car in permanent park... surely nothing could go wrong theni think the last think op needs is toque steer on the gravel
when i was a bit younger i had my torana at the drags and did a bit of damage to the diff. being young and wise decided to try and drive it home and was going round a round-about when it decided it was going to mash teeth togeather. it locked the diff solid hadr enough to stall the engine. i ahd to get a mate to come drag it out of the way and to even get it on a trailer we had to gut the thiing. when it whent it was like some one pulled the hand brake on it ended up pointing at the round about held traffic up for about 20 mins. the cops turned up and for a moment so did a tv crew ( someone rang them and said there was an acident... they left when they saw what really happened). so it is possible (but i really doubt it) that it could have been a fault with the car
also any one who is on here is passionate about cars meaning that 90% or more of us have been guilty of doing something like this when we where young and learning how to drive... i did.
i only hope that op wakes up and wises up before he does do any thing bad to himself or someone else. and yeah the silvia comment didn't help his cause much.
and now for something constructive.
a defencive driving course WILL really help also so could track days they provide a much safer and more controlled enviroment to do things like push yours and the cars limits and if playing in gravel is your thing try finding an amature rally club... learn the finer pionts of car control you will also be exposed to skilled drivers that won't critisise you but try and help you improve. i am the competition secratery for a club down here in tas and myself and the other members are always there to offer help when asked. not only will it help avoid situatios like that in the future but you will have a ton of fun too.
sorry to go on so much.
thanks for the responses. yes I know there's no rallying in a commodore, it was simply overestimating both my skills and the conditions..
I do still have a alot to learn I won't deny it,
I don't plan on it happening again and it has undoubtedly taught me a lesson. I will definitely look at the advance driving courses.
The car is also my own, have never borrowed my parents car.
thanks to those with actual advice and help. I do understand the consequences, in-experience and the stupidity of the said situation but was only looking for advice for the future and not any criticism.
cheers
