Thinking of changing serpentine belt. What are Gates brand like? I havn't heard of them before.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
I forgot to mention that mine is still the factory one with 145,000 k's and looks to be in good nick, but it would probably be stretched and due for renewal!

more likely it will be cracked..................its what rubber does best!
Any belt will do mate whether it be gates/bosch whatever they just belts
i have fitted hundreds of gates belts and NEVER had a problem.
other brands of belts will do the job just as well as gates, so id just grab whatever your local parts store supplies.

Funnily enough, it is not cracked in the ribs at all, which isn't bad for 145,000. Was only thinking of renewing it due to the possibility of it being slightly stretched.
Prices vary- $50+ at one place for a Gates brand and $30 at another place for the same. (Not Holden dealer)

The drive belt tensioner has a gauge with a pointer.
Looking at the pic in Gregory`s the belt renewal point is up the top of the gauge.

A belt really is a belt. Unless gates has a super special design I can't see it being too far off what every one else has.
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like
If your talking about the gates Blue one it's supposed to be a Racing belt made out of some super strong non stretch fibres blah blah blah.
I was feeling rich ine day at supercheap and got one and fitted it to my old VS. It worked, just like every other belt will. Eventually the blue fades and it looks like a normal belt too.
Gates, Bosch or Genuine will be fine.
Gates blue ones seemed to only come in 6PK2825 when i last looked.
VT/VX Ecotec w/ Aircon up to 12/2000 = 6PK2825
VX/VY Ecotec w/ Aircon from 12/2000 = 6PK2811
I'm using a $30 Bosch 6PK2810, no issues to report.
Thanks fellas, Gates it is then!

Gates probably make the "genuine" belts. Holden, and Ford etc dont make belts.
They source from outside suppliers, like a lot of car parts.
Dayco, and Bosch are also very good belts.
Gates also make blower belts for Top Fuel dragsters, so I think they know what they are doing.

yeah i guess. like this:
to check for cracks you often need to take a bunch of stuff off to get to the underside of the belt. but a lot of engines will have some sort of easy access panel which allows you to see the back of the belt. if its polished, then change it.
new belts are very matte:

It will do the job, serpentine belts rarely fail. V belts on the other hand.... Gates and Bosch would fly off my motor as soon as I revved them to 7 grand, dayco's would last a while but I have since been put onto Bando belts. $20 a belt and haven't spat a belt since, highly recommend them if you turn a motor with V belts hard.
Cheap, fast, reliable.....you only get to choose two.
Well guys I got a Gates for $30 at Autobarn today and just finished putting it on. Repco wanted $50 for the same brand and I won't even bother telling you what Holden wanted. Anyway, before installing the newy, I marked the indicator position, then with the new one on, it was in exactly the same place. (within tolerance) I found the old belt wasn't cracked at all, just shiny on the flat side compared to the new one. 145,000 k's aint bad, will be happy if I get that out of this one! Maybe I'll have to replace the tensioner down the track.
