Just out of curiousity since i cut anc polished my VY and VZ today to bring up the paint jobs, how often should u cut and polish ur car without going overboard obviously... Btw the cars look good as new now, time well spent![]()
I don't think clear coat likes to be cut. Certainly not often! Personally, I would not put a cutting compound anywhere near clearcoat.

From what I've read on here it's ok to use a very MILD cutting compound. But not something that can be done on a regular basis. The OP asked how often should you cut and polish your car. I replied as said, not often. I am of the understanding that clear coated paint cannot be cut and polished in the same way as the old non clear coat could be, therefore I won't be doing it to my car.

Meguiar's Paint Cleaner is a mild alternative to cut and polishes and it works awesomely. I'd would not use it often at all, like maybe once or twice a year. After you do the car with it use Meguiar's wax to seal it in. Reapply the wax every few months to keep it looking great. Wash it in the meantime as much as you like with a good quality car wash that won't strip the wax protection. I use Meguiar's NXT car wash atm and it's pretty damn good, as all Meguiar's products are.
My VX SS is 10 years old and I have only ever waxed mine from new, paint still feels like glass. I do wax it maybe 3 to 4 times a year though and it is garaged most of the time. First few years I used Meguiar's Gold Class then switched to Meguiar's Tech Wax. Paint is still brand new in appearance. I don't think I would be too keen on doing a cut and polish unless the paint was pretty bad.
I was thinking a cut and polish like every 3 years or something, my vy needed it bad as i dont think the previous owner ever washed the car - meguires fx wash or whatever its called couldnt even clean the dirt off, it was embedded. And did my vz while i was at it. 1st time i ever did that, usually happy with just a wash and double wax... Used to use mothers brand, but it just doesnt seem to be worth it, meguires is way better
i use meguiars paint cleaner every 6 months then meguairs tech wax, awesome results IMO.
also wash my car once a week with meguairs tech wash then give it a light wax with meguiars quik wax, keeps the paint looking awesome all year round with minimal effort.
always use meguairs IMO.
When I changed from the Gold Class to the Tech Wax I rang Meguiars and asked that question, whether they were just trying to sell me another product remains to be seen but they suggested that I give the car a quick going over with there Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner prior to using the Tech Wax, they said to remove the wax that was used in the Gold Class as they were different waxes, so I did that, the Paint Cleaner was easy to use, basically just like using the Gold Class, I then used the Tech Wax, I think both the Gold Class and the Tech Wax both do a good job, I feel the Gold Class may have a very small amount of polish in it, as a couple of times I might have had a small mark that the Tech Wax would not take off but I found the Gold Class did remove the mark, I still have both products in the garage.
Ok, thanks. Yeah, I find that the Gold class wax easily takes off tar and crap. So it's interesting to read there's a difference. Maybe I'll stick to GC.

You're meant to remove contaminants BEFORE you apply wax. The purpose of applying wax is for protection.
Decontamination -----> Paint correction ------> Protection. You don't have to polish/cut but at the very least clean the surface properly before applying an LSP.
That's true, a proper, sexy, smooth result will only happen if you prep it properly first. Although I'm led to believe that the Meguiar's cleaner wax does a little of this, and it worked ok, but it's nothing compared to paint cleaner which is really awesome stuff. The difference in the end result between just waxing, and preparing then waxing is massive. Well unless you have brand new paint. You're meant to remove contaminants BEFORE you apply wax. That's because Meguiars put cleaners in their products. They are designed for people who do half assed jobs when prepping.
Personally I think most of the Meguiars range is overpriced garbage. Can do much better for similar money.
