    Default Spare tyre

Alright, At the moment I have a old 15' bald spare has chunks missing and what not..
I have 17's on my car.. so isnt it bad for putting different sized tyre on the same axle?

So I was thinking. I have a slightly bent rim.. It has a barelly noticable vibration becuz of that, Still drivable.. But thinking of getting another second hand rim putting that on the car.. and using the bent rim as a spare.. good idea?

Driving with a different size isn't horrific if it's just a spare to get you to the tyre shop, I would not be using a bent rim, If I were you I would be replacing it ASAP. So buy the second hand one to replace the bent rim, then go grab a new 15' stocky that isn't destroyed and chuck $80 tyre on it. Better to be safe then have a tyre pop off a rim and write off a car.

I'll be he comes to get you, some shopping trolley kind of thing, that gets you where your going nice and slow... Well off you go that's fine, the pleasure's all mine.

Oh ok, sorry mate I was thinking massive bend like horrifically bad. Sometimes you get people on this site where it's a bit *facepalm* clearly you are not one of them. Glad you got it checked out.

In that case mate, yeah, use it as a spare and see if you can get yourself a nice second hand one to use.

There's certainly no legal problem with driving with different diameter rims on the same axle. That's what you get with a brand new Holden these days - large diameter alloys on all four corners and a steel standard rim in the boot. As long as the overall diameter of the spare wheel and tyre combination matches the other wheels, you would be ok. The slightly bent rim should probably go in the boot for use as a spare ok.

Oh really? Mums ford had original 18's (I think) and had a spare 18' in the back as a spare.
Is there a legal problem with a bald spare?

Only problem is Im not sure if my Mags actually fit into the spare compartment..
    cheers

Yeah my Dad has a VE, has the Interceptor rim as a spare yet 18inch alloys all round.
Legally all tyres on a car of 4.5 tonnes or less must have a complete tread and must have a depth no less than 1.5mm. So technically there's not problem if it's in your boot. But as soon as you put it on when you get a flat, you can get pinged I would think.

get pulled over twice by the same cop and he will give you a defect notice.

tyres on the two front need to be matching and tyres on the two rear need to be matching. only way out of it is if you are driving to a place of repair. if you dont have your story straight, you will get a defect notice immediatly.

    Ari

Are you saying the tyres on each axle have to be the same make, style and size? Perhaps in Victoria that's true. In NSW, the requirement is that the tyres be in road worthy condition, with a minimum of 2mm (or 1.5 as above - not sure of the exact measurement these days), but they don't have to be the same make and model of tyre. Other states may have different regs too.

Consider that in this state, retreads are still legal and they are often different carcasses when you buy more than one.

I've got no idea about SA though sorry.

hmmm, didnt realise it was different state to state. i am 100% sure about VIC. front 2 same and rear 2 same, but front and rear can be different.

also, all DOT marked tyres have treadwear indicators. so its not really a measurement. just "if it hits this mark, they are no good"
