Hey guys did a search but couldn't find the answer I need.
I was driving to work this morning and hit a fairly decent sized rock that was on the road and destroyed my sump. So now I'm wondering if I have to completely take the k frame out or can I just support the engine with an engine crane loosen the engine mounts and lift it up a bit to get to the sump bolts and get the sump out?
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers guys
wow lol....
Fair effort yet lol. Any idea on the question lol?
As you've already suggested, it can be done in the vehicle.
Most of the VY sumps we sell are for this very same issue, & I'm reliably informed it's usually done this way, seems to affect the VY more than earlier (alloy sump) models, common on the Gen 3 too.
Hopefully you switched the engine off immediately to avoid the VZ problem of low oil pressure (although that's not from holing a sump)...........![]()
It's all good I've already dropped the k frame and got the sump out. Yeah I turned it off as soon as the check oil light came on so plenty of oil in it still. I've got a sump from a vt series 2. Will that matter? It's going to fit it's just not as deep as the vy sump I dont think, becoz the vy holds more oil, correct?
Yes the VTs sump hold 4.8L and the VY Sump holds 5.5L
Good effort LOL
Haha thanks. It won't make a difference if I put that sump on will it?
Nice sized boulder you hit there mate![]()

I think the only reason for the bigger sump was to enable a greater oil capacity and permit longer service intervals. If you fit a VT sump, service the car at VT intervals (or more frequently if you prefer). You might need to change the oil pickup too. I haven't had to do this job so I don't know if the pickups were different. Someone here will know for sure.
the vt sump is different vy have a bit at the back that bolts onto gearbox that vt don't have you could get that fixed if your desperate. Idk whether sumps being different will affect how they bolt on

I'd stay with a VY sump, more oil, the VY actually doesn't the the brace/s to the trans as in the VT but (IIRC) different gasket.
If you do use the VT sump, check the dipstick, might need to change that too?
If your car is lowered (aren't most these days) I'd recommend a sump guard, the WH Gen3 should bolt on but may need some minor mods?
Thanks for the input. I'll source a vy sump tomorrow. What are Sumps worth anyways. Picked up the vt one for 80 bucks today. I think that's reasonably cheap?
yeah sounds ok i sold one like 4 years ago to someone for 250 which was when they were sort of new and hard to get. Id be trying to get your money back on VT one if you can or swap it for a vy (dont know where you got it from)

Haha that would be awesome. Yeah it's a shame. Oh well I'll have to see if I can find one tomorrow.

Cars up and running now. Got my money back for the vt sump and picked up a vy sump for 120 so pretty happy with that.
Yeah It was at running temp and just a little bit under when cold. Looked identical to the one that came off and it normally used to take around 6 litres, sometimes under sometimes over.
