Alright, I had my car serviced at Kmart Auto, and they replaced my fuel filter..
Looking at my fuel pump today, it looked something like this:
[FUELTANK]---[<FLOW<]-----------[ENGINE]
I noticed that the direction of the flow of the fuel filter was aimed towards the tank instead of the engine.. Checking online it said it should be aimed towards the engine..
so I flipped it around, after doing this. Started it and seemed to run a bit better..
After running it.. It started making a whining noise from underneath.. What it causing this?
I often run on empty
Cheers..

yeah i got that bit. it shows the flow of the filter. the rest of the post was blah.
or maybe im just drunk?
nah it was blah
well i am gonna assume from all the blah, that if you have turned your filter in the correct direction... if itsnt the fault of the filter. i dunno. wild guess. fit a part correctly, i would guess it shouldnt cause problems elsewhere.
what i am thinking deep down inside is that you have turned your filter the INcorrect dircetion. or maybe the filter was due for a change and all you have done is allowed all the built up crap to shift and done something weird in the whoosiewhatsit.
or something
Gotta love my 'blah' , Well I checked on how to change the filter in the how-to forums, says the flow be aimed at the front of the car, and I also primed the pump w.out the filter and flowed out so I put it inline how I thought it should be.. being
[tank]--[>flow>]---[engine].
make sense? O.o' meh, Im going in to get new tyres so Ill get them to replace it or w/e
So now all the crap that was on one side of the filter has now been put through the fuel lines. Sounds um good.
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like
Start with a new fuel filter pretty cheap option.
far out, changing a fuel filter on a vs is probly quicker then changing oil, and it takes 2 seconds to check which way the flow is ment to be facing, mabey an apprentice or something put it on, yeah you shouldnt have flipped it around, you should have just put a brand new one on so that any crap that was on the wrong side of the filter wouldnt go into your fuel lines when you turned it around
Yes the whining is probably the fuel pump on its way out. Having the filter the wrong way could have possibly caused the fuel pump to work harder. And being an older car it would already have some wear and tear. It is possible the pump couldn't cope with the slight extra stress.
That is my educated guess anyway![]()
It now has a new filter, Still the noise is there not as noticeable..
Didnt think about the crap going back into the lines >.<
Sounds like the Kmart Auto in SA are just as competent as the guys in Vic.
Its things as stupid as backward fuel filters and not doing up radiator hoses, not putting interior back together, not bleeding coolant, unrequested work carried out, overfilling fluids etc.. that made me start servicing my own car. Got a good socket/spanner set, gregorys manual, jack stands and said "how hard can it be" in a Jeremy clarkson-esque manner. Ive got a very good, but fairly expensive mechanic that I go to for serious stuff though
Yeah, bit annoying..
Only problem with doing work myself.. I hate doing work under neath.. I can change Airfilter, sparkplugs, coolant, radiator hoses, Id be keen to change my thermo..
Im not keen on touching diff, transmission, engine oil.. and internal engine work..
Kinda annoyed holden flogged my $230 for cleaning my intake.. I cleaned my out my other engines intake for like 90% less..
Need to find a local mechanic that I can trust.. so far not good :P
does it sound like a constant high pitched electrical frequency noise like "mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" (think of it in your head)
if it is, your not the only one with it. although mechanic was like, its annoying but nothing is wrong.
and a stupid question about changing fuel filter. do you need to clamp/crimp the lines on either side/oneside?.

Self service is the way to go.......
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
I hate working underneath too mate so I guess I cant blame you. Gravel driveway doesn't help a whole lot so I try and avoid doing many things in winter. It gets a bit hard to find as firm patch of driveway for the trolley jack to sit on sometimes
Yeah abit like that.. I thought if it got louder and louder it means it that the fuel pump is dieing..
Uhm, have alook at this how-to..
Fuel Filter How-To (VN - VS)
Our drive way is like Asphalt, its hard to lay on and it hurts.. And then I dont have any proper tools to hold the car up.. dont like to get under :P
most fuel pumps do it if you listen carefully, on older commodores anyway. It just means there working fine. some are louder then others. but i wouldnt be to worried
Here's a tip for guys who don't have proper garages to work in.
I have a nice smooth concrete floor to work on but never use a creeper because they rob you of working height under the car.
When working under the car, I use a large cardboard box from a 42" TV, folded flat and taped together at the edges. It's big enough to work on and only reduces work height by about a centimetre. When not being used, it just sits flat agains the garage wall. It would be ideal on a gravel driveway too as the cardboard is thick enough to act as padding.

i have had some cars in making the resonant noise of the fuel-pump, but up in the regulator. its stands to reason if the crud from your filter got all the way around to your pressure regulator, it could get caught and start humming. i dunno, just sayin'
