    Default Thermostat Gasket

i replaced my thermostat on my VT when i was servicing my car, and as i was doing it i noticed the gasket was pretty well screwed.

so i went and got a new one and some gasket goo to seal it up without any leaks.

so sealed it all up but still leaks a bit through the goo.

so i went to autobahn (only place open on a sunday) and they gave me a self adhesive gasket and said i Dont need goo when install it all.

    my questions are

1: is he bullshit me? and i should install it and goo it again? to be on the save side.

2: if the car is cold can the gasket be changed without dropping the coolant.

    Thanks Dan.

Never had the thermostat housing off before, but having to remove top hose for some reason it leaked coolant, Id suggest dropped some coolant down into a bucket so you can replace later..

Some people will say you need goo, some people say you dont.. I personally dont have goo on mine.. but some people would have..

Id suggest tightening the bolts up a bit more..

I've done it with and without goo, worked fine either way.... I always use goo just in case, just get some on my finger and put a very light coat on both sides of the gasket then tighten it up

    works for me lol

I have replaced them with just the standard gaskets, because they are paper a bit seems to weep through each time, like a drop or so. but give the self adhesive one a go, be sure both surfaces are very very clean

I've always used the regular paper gasket for $1 at supercheap, done it many times.

hey guys so bit of update i changed the gasket etc etc and sealed it all up fine. but then noticed my leak wasn't from the area i though it was. its coming between the housing and the pipe, but only on one side.

what should my actions be to fix this? new housing? new pipe?

    thanks for all your help.

Looks more like the clamp for the pipe, only a few dollars.

As said above, go for a new clamp, and if that doesn't work, go for a new pipe. TBH the clamp looks pretty rat s**t anyway, so a new one would be good.

New clamp and get a new hose while your there...... Also try and find T-clamps, so much better then the shitty screw one's (you can get them on ebay for <$5)... so much easier to take off aswell

I've done 2 thermostat gaskets now. Last time i tried sanding the block and the housing with some wet & dry on a flat surface (wood or glass) to get the surfaces smoother to get a better seal. I can still see coolant around the gasket on the outside but i think its actually leaking terribly. Stupid fiddly things eh..

I've used a smear of ultra blue on the few I've done, probly doesn't need it, but they didn't leak.
