With a VU SS as they are getting a bit dated there's going to be a lot of wear and tear parts going soon, so check all the normal things. I'd honestly pay RACV to come out and inspect the car for you before you buy, as it will tell you definitively if there are any problems with the car.
    livin' the low life.

    Buy it.

lol, sorry the VU SS is my dream car to own. Honestly, look for all the big things, engine condition, gearbox/diff condition, check for leaks, make sure it's not blowing smoke. They are more expensive than their sedan and wagon cousins so be ready to front up more coin to get it.
Have the inspection done, it'll point out any glaring problems, listen to the engine carefully for any knocking or ticking sounds, check all the fluids for colour and levels. Make sure it's had a service every 10K at least and evidence of it. If serviced these engines go for ages.

lol, mechanic, you should know more than us

They are prone, like the whole generation, to power steering pump/rack leaks, oil leaks and a few others.

    Here are the big ones:
    VT - VX Faults

As for auto vs manual, there are lots of people on here who will say manual's are better in every way shape or form and people who drive an auto (such as myself) am an inferior driver because of it. In reality, the acceleration difference and what not will be unnoticeable and not really an issue when you have a V8 under the hood. If you're in stop start traffic, for the sake of you knees go with an auto. From a mechanical stand point, the auto gearboxes are very solid and can achieve excellent lifespans as well as performances. The manuals are just as good, really it is up to your personal preference as a driver.
